On 29 October, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) announced the appointment of Mark Munsell as its new Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO). Munsell will balance this new responsibility while continuing to serve as the Director of the Data and Digital Innovation Directorate at the agency.
In his newly expanded role, Munsell is set to direct and harmonise NGA's advancements and initiatives in the sphere of artificial intelligence applied to geospatial intelligence. This will include advising the NGA leadership on the integration of AI into the agency's production lines and operational frameworks. He is also tasked with compiling a comprehensive inventory of ongoing and future AI projects. The prioritisation and recommendation of new AI initiatives fall under his purview, ensuring that NGA stays at the cutting edge of geospatial intelligence technology.
A significant part of Munsell's role will also involve the establishment of governance measures for the responsible use and deployment of AI. Under these initiatives, two main programmes stand out: AGAIM and GREAT. AGAIM, or Accreditation of GEOINT AI Models, is a pilot project designed to bolster the reliability, safety, and trustworthiness of geospatial intelligence AI models through a systematic accreditation framework. GREAT, or GEOINT Responsible AI Training, offers instruction and certification processes aimed at promoting ethical AI usage. This programme is intended for all individuals involved in the coding and application of GEOINT AI at the agency.
Beyond internal duties, Munsell's role as CAIO positions him as an influential player in fostering both internal and external collaboration within the broader intelligence community. By sharing computing resources and insights, the agency aims to accelerate AI adoption, reduce associated costs, and enhance its operational efficiency.
Additionally, as a member of NGA’s AI National Security Coordination Group, Munsell will participate in the Community’s CAIO Council. This council plays a crucial role in advising and aiding the Intelligence Community and the Department of Defense in realising their AI transformation goals.
Munsell’s dual role at the NGA signifies the agency’s commitment to not only harnessing artificial intelligence for its strategic goals but also ensuring that its use is governed by responsible and ethically sound practices. This move underscores the NGA's strategic focus on innovation and its commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving field of geospatial intelligence.
