The report indicates that the surge in Python's popularity is largely attributed to the growing demand for AI technologies. Python’s application in AI-related projects is evident, especially in the realm of generative AI, where contributions have surged by 59%. Furthermore, overall contributions to AI-related public projects have nearly doubled since last year. This surge in activity is particularly notable in countries such as India, Germany, Japan, and Singapore, which are leading the charge in AI development initiatives on GitHub.
The platform has also seen a significant rise in the use of Jupyter Notebooks, with a reported 92% increase. Jupyter Notebooks are a core tool for Python developers, bolstering the development of open source software and reflecting the shifting focus towards more data-driven and computationally intensive projects.
Globally, GitHub has experienced a surge in new developers joining its ranks, many of whom are contributing to open source projects for the first time. This influx of new talent is reshaping the user base, extending beyond traditional software developers to include a broader range of professionals within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
In addition to Python, other programming languages such as JavaScript, TypeScript, and Java continue to maintain strong communities on GitHub. However, there is a noticeable uptick in the adoption of systems programming languages like Rust, indicative of evolving developer preferences and needs.
Looking forward, GitHub projects that by 2028, India will boast the largest developer population on the platform. Parallel growth is anticipated in Africa and Latin America, particularly in countries like Brazil, heralding new opportunities and expansions in these regions.
This report was released in conjunction with GitHub’s annual Universe event, during which the company announced the rollout of new AI models and enhancements to its product offerings. GitHub Copilot, which initially launched with OpenAI's GPT-3-based Codex, has recently seen upgrades allowing for the use of models like GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and variations tailored for distinct latency and quality needs.
The introduction of new models signifies GitHub's commitment to diversifying its AI offerings beyond its reliance on OpenAI. Notably, the launch of Copilot Chat now includes OpenAI's o1-preview and o1-mini models.
