Singapore's digital economy has solidified its role as a significant contributor to the nation's financial landscape, maintaining a robust 17.7% share of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). According to recent statistics released by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), the digital sector contributed SGD 113 billion (approximately USD 85.31 billion) to the GDP in the past year. This contribution equates to SGD 1 for every SGD 6 within Singapore's economic framework.

The digital economy in Singapore has experienced a remarkable compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.2% from 2018 to 2023, which is nearly double the nominal GDP growth rate of 5.8% for the country's entire economy. The digital sector consists of the information and communications sector, which makes up about one-third of the digital economy, while the remaining two-thirds are from non-information and communications sectors.

Small and midsize businesses (SMBs) have been pivotal in driving this growth, with an impressive 94.6% of SMBs adopting digital technologies across key areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, cloud solutions, and data analytics. Through the government's Productivity Solutions Grant, these businesses have reported average cost savings of 50% between 2018 and 2023.

SMBs have access to over 400 pre-approved digital solutions available through the government's CTO-as-a-service platform. This initiative supports digital transformation and has already been utilised by 145,000 users. Approximately 20% of these pre-approved solutions are AI-enabled, with IMDA aiming to increase this figure and bring an additional 15,000 SMBs on board with AI technologies in the coming two years.

In February 2024, IMDA launched a generative AI sandbox specifically tailored for SMBs, allowing them to experiment with Gen AI applications in a safe environment. A second iteration of this sandbox is set for release in December, offering a curated list of 15 Gen AI solutions targeting areas such as talent acquisition, web design, and virtual customer service. The initiative expects to reach out to over 300 SMBs, with eligible participants receiving up to 50% funding support for a three-month trial of these applications.

The adoption of AI technologies amongst SMBs rose to 4.2% last year, marking an increase from 3.5% in 2018. Larger enterprises in Singapore are also embracing AI, with a significant jump to 44% deploying AI applications last year, compared to 16.7% in 2018.

The technology sector in Singapore is expanding at a pace that surpasses the broader economy, growing at over 11%. IMDA chief executive Lew Chuen Hong highlighted the importance of technology as a structural driver for future growth, despite global economic uncertainties. He emphasised the strategic significance of technology and AI's transformative potential across various sectors, underscoring the need for Singapore to focus investments in areas that would enable companies to leverage technological advancements effectively.

Singapore's commitment to nurturing the digital economy, particularly through the integration of AI and support for SMBs, underscores its strategic focus on establishing itself as a global digital hub in the face of evolving economic landscapes.
