AI Michael Parkinson to Host New Celebrity Podcast Series

The late legendary British TV personality, Sir Michael Parkinson, known for his unparalleled interviewing skills, is set to make a unique posthumous return via an artificial intelligence (AI) version in a new podcast series. Entitled "Virtually Parkinson," this innovative project will feature unscripted interviews with celebrities, offering listeners a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

This groundbreaking eight-part series is an initiative of Deep Fusion Films, a company at the forefront of integrating AI technology with film and podcast productions. Sir Michael Parkinson, who passed away last year, was renowned for a career that encompassed seven decades, during which he conducted over 2,000 interviews with some of the world's most prominent figures. The AI version of Parkinson has been crafted using insights from his extensive career, ensuring that the conversations retain an authentic feel akin to the style he was celebrated for.

The podcast has received the full backing of Parkinson's family and estate. His son, Mike Parkinson, was instrumental in bringing this project to life. He reached out to Deep Fusion Films to explore the possibility of using AI to recreate his father's iconic presentation style for a podcast, complementing a YouTube channel dedicated to preserving Parkinson's media legacy.

According to Benjamin Field, the co-founder and executive producer at Deep Fusion Films, the idea originated when Mike Parkinson suggested using his father's voice to present a podcast revisiting his significant interviews. This sparked a creative dialogue about employing AI to emulate Parkinson's iconic style in a format that resonates with contemporary audiences while honouring his legacy.

Field noted, "By focusing on the ethics and openly showcasing the AI aspect, we saw a way to create something truly engaging for both long-time fans and new listeners." The technological feat was accomplished through several existing AI tools, resulting in a system named 'Squawk'. This system facilitates live spoken interactions between current-day individuals and historical voices, effectively bringing famed personalities of the past back into contemporary discussion.

To ensure transparency, the AI Parkinson will clarify at the beginning of each episode that it is an AI-hosted podcast. During the third episode, a segment will be dedicated to discussing the experience of being interviewed by an AI replica with the guest, thus shedding light on this novel interaction experience.

Jamie Anderson, another co-founder of Deep Fusion Films, remarked on the positive reception the AI version has received, noting that people have been "wowed by how accurate and warmly nostalgic" the recreated Michael Parkinson voice is, adding that the interviews provide an "interesting and engaging experience."

Mike Parkinson, who shares a profound connection with his father, having worked alongside him for over two decades through Parkinson Productions, has been closely involved at each stage of the AI's development. He sees the podcast as a tribute to his father's remarkable career, expressing his hope that audiences will appreciate the technology and concept, but more importantly, reminisce about Parkinson's exceptional interviewing prowess and the fond memories associated with his work.

This podcast, commissioned by Night Train Digital—an agency dedicated to shaping and distributing digital content—aims to transport listeners to a space where nostalgia meets cutting-edge technology, by revitalising the essence of Sir Michael Parkinson's interviews for a modern audience. The series is slated for release later this year.
