In the heart of Malawi's rural communities, a technological revolution is quietly taking root as farmers turn to artificial intelligence for agricultural guidance. Over the past year, an AI chatbot named Ulangizi has become a constant companion for local farmers, providing them with critical information in their native Chichewa language. This initiative, spearheaded by the nonprofit organisation Opportunity International, leverages data from the Malawian government's agricultural manual to offer instant advice on crop and animal care. Maron Galeta, a farmer deeply embedded in this transformation, shares his experience: "In the past we could wait for days for agriculture extension workers to come and address whatever problems we had on our farms. Just a touch of a button we have all the information we need."

Opportunity International is aspiring to replicate this success on a broader scale. In February, the organisation launched an accelerator programme aimed at fostering AI-driven solutions for underserved communities globally. This initiative culminated in the announcement of three winning projects on 30 October, each designed to address specific challenges faced by target groups. The winners were awarded approximately $150,000 each to pilot their solutions, with aspirations of reaching millions within the next two years.

The program's Chief Technology Officer, Greg Nelson, envisions AI as a transformative force for knowledge accessibility. "Since the mobile phone, this is the biggest democratising change that we have seen in our lifetime," he stated, highlighting AI's potential to break down barriers for communities traditionally excluded from valuable information.

The incubator brought together Opportunity International employees from various regions, who collectively brainstormed over 200 ideas aimed at harnessing AI's capabilities to address local issues. The eventual top 20 teams developed their ideas into app prototypes with guidance from mentors from leading tech companies and support from MIT platforms. A panel of judges selected the three winners.

The first winning project seeks to advance agricultural AI solutions further than Ulangizi by incorporating personalised data inputs. This app is designed to provide tailored farming advice, such as optimal seed planting times and fertiliser usage based on individual acreage, historical crop data, and prevailing climate conditions. Rebecca Nakacwa, one of the app's Ugandan founders, emphasised the critical role of real-time climate pattern understanding: "When we went to farmers, we thought the biggest problem was around pricing. But we were so surprised, because they told us their topmost problem is climate: finding a solution to how to work with the different climate changes. We know that with AI, this is achievable." The launch of this app is planned for next summer's planting season in Rwanda and Malawi.

Another innovative winner targets the educational sector by equipping teachers with tools for crafting curriculum-aligned lesson plans tailored to various student needs. This initiative is led by Lordina Omanhene-Gyimah, who drew upon her experience teaching in rural Ghana, where educators frequently grappled with resource limitations and diverse classrooms. Omanhene-Gyimah aims for the app's introduction in Ghanaian and Ugandan classrooms before the upcoming academic year.

The third app, designed by former Kenyan teacher Anne Njine, serves as an administrative aid for school owners, assisting with tasks ranging from teacher recruitment to behaviour management. Opportunity International is poised to introduce this app to 20,000 schools, potentially impacting 6 million students.

Nevertheless, challenges remain. Limited access to smartphones and reliable mobile connectivity in rural areas could hinder the full realisation of these AI-driven solutions. The apps are being developed to function offline, addressing connectivity issues. Furthermore, ensuring precision in AI responses is critical, especially in educational contexts. Nelson believes that collaborations with clients and training AI on specific data sets will enhance accuracy.

Looking forward, Opportunity International aims to nurture the creation of three new AI-based applications annually, contingent on funding from philanthropists and corporate partners. Despite not disclosing the total funds raised so far, the organisation is committed to advancing practical and impactful AI applications. The founders of the winning projects are optimistic about their efforts. "It's not just we like using AI because it's in vogue and everybody's doing it," stated Omanhene-Gyimah. "We are in the field. We work with these clients on a daily basis, and we know what they need."
