Next month, the CiTTi Awards 2024 will unfold, celebrating innovative strides in urban mobility. As part of the build-up to the event, City Transport & Traffic Innovation Magazine is spotlighting each contender in this year's newly introduced Aurora Insights AI and Data Analytics Award category. This accolade recognises pioneering applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics in the transportation sector, showcasing how these technologies can transform urban mobility by enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

This year’s contest attracted entries demonstrating AI's capacity to revolutionise travel planning, improve traffic management, and forecast maintenance needs, resulting in improved urban transport systems. The nominees, all unveiling significant advancements in the field, include CurbCargo and Savills, DPD UK, Greenplan and EPG, GXO with Iceland, Mobilityways with Prologis, Zeelo and Stagecoach, Smart Transport Hub, and Transport for West Midlands and VivaCity.

CurbCargo and Savills have been recognised for their management of London’s Leadenhall Building. They have employed Software-as-a-Service technology to streamline loading bay activities, reducing congestion and urban freight, and subsequently improving air quality by minimising emissions. These efforts highlight their commitment to advancing sustainable urban logistics.

DPD UK garners attention for its strides toward achieving net zero by 2040. With a focus on robotic collaboration, DPD has introduced carbon-neutral autonomous delivery robots across the nation. These AI-driven innovations underscore DPD’s commitment to environmentally conscious parcel delivery and reduced city traffic.

The partnership of Greenplan and EPG has developed an advanced routing optimisation technology in collaboration with the University of Bonn and DHL. This approach is showcased by its impact on reducing transport costs and CO2 emissions significantly, underlining an enhanced efficiency model integrated by clients through scalable, modular tools.

GXO, in partnership with supermarket chain Iceland, has been recognised for implementing AI-driven route optimisation in Iceland’s distribution network. Developed in association with Datasparq, this initiative has cut significant travel distances and diesel consumption, leading to substantial monetary savings and a dramatic decrease in CO2 emissions.

A joint effort by Mobilityways, Prologis, Zeelo, and Stagecoach addresses Scope 3 commuting emissions across various UK sites. Deploying data-driven insights, these organisations have amplified sustainable transport and cycling safety, thereby reducing dependence on private vehicles and lowering CO2 emissions.

The Smart Transport Hub is making waves with its Smart Lenz technology, utilising AI and sensors to gather real-time data on various urban mobility interactions. This facilitates informed traffic planning and promotes active travel by easing congestion across several UK boroughs.

Transport for West Midlands, paired with VivaCity, has pioneered a UK-first initiative using AI sensors to heighten road safety. By monitoring multi-modal traffic data and leveraging VivaCity’s ‘Near Miss’ feature, this project pinpoints high-risk traffic zones, supplying local authorities with analytical tools to implement preemptive safety measures.

Irish comedian Andrew Ryan has been announced as the special guest host for the CiTTi Awards 2024. The winners will be unveiled on Tuesday, 26th November, at an event held at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in central London. The ceremony will welcome 200 of the UK’s leading transport professionals and stakeholders, offering a platform for acknowledging extraordinary technological advancements and fostering invaluable networking opportunities.

The event comes after a rigorous evaluation process where more than 20 industry specialists assessed nearly 90 written entries and presentations across 20 award categories. The ceremony promises to be a distinguished gathering of the nation’s transport sector luminaries, setting the stage for a night of recognition and celebration.
