Humane, a technology company, has formally announced the recall of approximately 10,500 units of its charging case for the AI Pin, following concerns about safety. This recall follows a previous warning issued to customers, highlighting a potential risk associated with the device. The units in question were sold between November of last year and May of this year.
The recall was sparked by findings from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) which indicated that the lithium polymer battery in the Charge Case Accessory could overheat, presenting a potential fire hazard. Humane has acknowledged this risk, noting in a communication to customers back in June that similar concerns had been identified. Although there has been a report of a charge case overheating and melting during charging, there have not been any incidents of injury or damage to property linked to the issue.
The recall does not affect the AI Pin device itself or the accompanying magnetic Battery Booster and charging pad, as confirmed by the company. However, the problematic charge case represents a further challenge for Humane’s AI Pin, which has faced difficulties in the market due to negative reviews, sluggish sales, and a wave of returns since its launch. This recent recall underscores the slow sales, a fact evidenced by the number of units being recalled.
In an effort to revive the product’s fortunes, Humane has not only reduced the price of the AI Pin, now selling a cheaper model that does not include the charge case, but has also been rolling out software updates to enhance the device's functionality. The latest update, CosmOS 1.2, has been touted by the company as the most significant since the initial launch.
Customers impacted by the recall are provided with the choice of either receiving a full refund or opting for a replacement of the charge case. Those seeking a refund will receive $149 if the charge case was purchased independently, or $129 if it was included as part of the AI Pin “complete package.” The CPSC has noted that a revised, safer version of the charge case is expected to be made available within three to six months.
This development comes as Humane strives to address the challenges posed by its first product and reassure its customer base of its commitment to safety and product quality.
