Neara, an Australian-based company known for its cutting-edge AI-powered predictive grid modelling software, has secured $31 million in a Series C funding round. This significant financial boost aims to bolster Neara's global expansion, enhancing its operations across major regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The announcement marks a pivotal step in Neara's mission to address the pressing challenges of energy resilience and infrastructure modernisation.

The fresh capital will facilitate the expansion of Neara’s advanced modelling and simulation capabilities into additional critical infrastructure sectors beyond energy, such as telecommunications and public transportation. Neara's 3D digital modelling technology is designed to assist utility companies by providing proactive solutions for network optimisation. By offering simulations that detect potential safety and reliability issues, utilities can identify and implement effective remediation steps with greater efficiency.

CenterPoint Energy and Southern California Edison are among the utility firms in the United States leveraging Neara’s technology. These partnerships underscore the platform's ability to transform traditionally lengthy processes into swift operations, offering critical analyses of infrastructure that previously took months to accomplish in mere hours or days. For example, following the impact of Hurricane Beryl in 2024, CenterPoint Energy utilised Neara’s technology to expedite field insight analysis from a year and a half to just three hours. The technology also enables the company to manage vegetation risks and identify essential equipment upgrades rapidly.

Southern California Edison benefits from Neara’s technology with a 50% faster response in addressing hazardous vegetation in wildfire-prone areas. Such capabilities are crucial in enhancing the reliability and resiliency of utilities' infrastructure, potentially garnering regulatory support by demonstrating the effectiveness of proposed upgrades.

The Series C funding round builds on Neara's previous investment round completed in September 2023. Since then, the company has successfully scaled its presence in the United States and Europe. With a global reach, Neara reports modelling over 1.5 million square miles of electricity infrastructure and 12 million infrastructure assets worldwide.

In Australia, Neara's platform played a significant role in assisting SA Power Networks during the River Murray flood from November 2022 to February 2023. The flood, the third-highest ever recorded in South Australia, caused extensive damage to approximately 400 miles of powerline and about 4,000 power poles. Leveraging Neara’s AI-driven capabilities, SA Power Networks swiftly analysed 21,000 powerline spans within the affected area. This process, traditionally taking months, was concluded in a mere fifteen minutes.

The modelling enabled SA Power Networks to predict potential impacts on electricity distribution networks at various flood stages. This foresight helped determine when and where power disconnections were necessary and facilitated quicker power restorations as water levels receded. Doug Schmidt, general manager of Network Management at SA Power Networks, noted the utility's ability to maintain and restore power efficiently during the flood crisis.

As Neara continues to grow its footprint, its innovations are reshaping how critical infrastructure is managed amid increasing environmental challenges. The company's advancements promise significant improvements in infrastructure resilience and operational efficiency for utilities worldwide.
