In recent years, the landscape of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has witnessed significant advancements and competition among major tech companies. While leaders like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta have made significant strides, Apple has notably lagged behind, as reported by Bloomberg's Apple analyst Mark Gurman.

Two years ago, OpenAI launched its groundbreaking AI model, ChatGPT, setting the pace for generative AI developments. Google quickly followed with its Bard AI chatbot, and Microsoft's collaboration with OpenAI led to the integration of GPT technology into its Bing search engine. Despite these advancements and the subsequent entrance of companies like Amazon and Meta, Apple remained conspicuously absent from the generative AI race until recently.

In June 2024, during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled its foray into the AI domain with 'Apple Intelligence.' This development marked the company's official entry into the competitive world of AI, signalling its intention to catch up with other tech giants.

Mark Gurman highlighted in his Power On newsletter that while Apple is perceived to be 'at least two years behind' in AI technology, this delay aligns with Apple's cautious approach, which prioritizes readiness over rapid deployment. Apple's senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi, confirmed this sentiment, explaining that Apple's AI endeavours are strategized to ensure personalised user experiences while upholding stringent privacy and security standards.

Currently, Apple is slowly rolling out its AI features to beta users of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS 15.1. The rollout includes early versions of generative writing tools, revamped privacy features, and enhancements to Siri, Apple's voice assistant. Users also have access to features like the Image Playground and AI image generation, with more advanced capabilities expected to be introduced in future updates.

Parallelly, Apple is integrating OpenAI's ChatGPT into Siri, providing users with another generative AI experience apart from Apple Intelligence.

In the broader AI hardware market, Nvidia has maintained a commanding presence, with its graphics processing units (GPUs) dominating 92% of the data centre GPU market, according to IoT Analytics. Nvidia's relentless pace of innovation has solidified its position, seeing five consecutive quarters of substantial year-over-year growth.

Yet, a new player on the horizon, Cerebras Systems, poses a potential challenge to Nvidia's supremacy. Founded in 2016, Cerebras has developed the Wafer-Scale Engine (WSE), a cutting-edge semiconductor boasting 4 trillion transistors, 900,000 compute cores, and 44 gigabytes of SRAM. The WSE aims to reduce latency and increase speed for AI training and inference, positioning itself as a formidable competitor to Nvidia's GPU solutions.

In recent developments, Cerebras tested its technology with Meta's updated generative AI model, Llama 3.2, and reported speeds 16 times faster than existing GPU solutions while arguing that its technology costs significantly less than competitors. Despite these claims, Nvidia's longstanding reputation and comprehensive market application give it a robust foothold as Cerebras makes inroads into the AI landscape.

Both Apple's and Cerebras' recent activities illustrate the dynamism within the AI sector, with established players defending their territories and newcomers seeking to make their mark. As the AI race continues, companies will likely jockey for innovation, performance, and user-centric advancements in this rapidly evolving field.
