Brandtech's AI Initiative Empowers Students in Digital Storytelling Collaboration with Northwestern University
The Brandtech Group has embarked on an innovative partnership with Northwestern University, integrating its advanced AI marketing platform, Pencil, into the curriculum of the university's Digital Storytelling programme. This collaboration, spearheaded by Anas Ghazi, Adjunct Assistant Professor at Northwestern, seeks to equip graduate students with cutting-edge skills in generative AI (Gen AI) content creation as they prepare to enter the competitive marketing industry.
Pencil, developed by Brandtech and launched in 2018, is already a transformative tool in the marketing landscape, having crafted over one million ads for brands including Unilever and Diageo, with a remarkable $1 billion in media spending managed through its platform. Now, this sophisticated technology is being leveraged to train the next generation of marketers.
The initiative centres around providing graduate students full access to Pencil as part of their coursework, allowing them to delve into AI-driven content generation and digital storytelling. This hands-on experience is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application, offering students the opportunity to engage in real-world campaigns. Their efforts will culminate in a live pitch for Sharing Excess, a food rescue non-profit organisation, with campaigns to be launched on platforms such as TikTok, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
As the marketing industry faces a significant talent shortage in AI skills—highlighted by a 29% increase in employer demand and a 70% lack of available expertise—the initiative is particularly timely. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a Pencil Pro Certification, accompanied by a LinkedIn badge, enhancing their employability. Furthermore, top-performing students may earn internships with The Brandtech Group, fostering a direct path from education to industry roles.
Rebecca Sykes, Partner and Head of Emerging Technologies at Brandtech, underscores the alignment of this initiative with the company's strategic goals, stating, "We don’t just want to train the next generation of AI talent in marketing; we want to hire them."
The educational experience will immerse students in some of the leading AI tools, such as GPT-4, Google PaLM 2, and DALL-E 3, covering everything from ideation and consumer insights to image and text generation and campaign analysis. This comprehensive exposure aims to prepare students to not only participate in but also lead the evolving landscape of AI in marketing.
Anas Ghazi articulates the programme's ambition, noting, “Generative AI is no longer the future; it is here. As educators, technologists, and storytellers, we have a responsibility to integrate practical skills with social purpose, enabling our students to be thought leaders in the field.”
The collaboration is further supported by a keynote speech from Brandtech founder and CEO, David Jones, who stresses the disruptive potential of Gen AI in marketing, likening its impact to that of television and the internet. He expresses enthusiasm for the pivotal role Northwestern students will play in this transformation.
Victoria Wilson, COO of Sharing Excess, echoes this sentiment, expressing optimism that the integration of AI and creativity will not only bolster their campaigns but also raise awareness about critical issues like food waste and hunger.
Through this forward-thinking partnership, Brandtech and Northwestern University are paving the way for a new era of marketing professionals skilled in the art and science of digital storytelling, underpinned by the transformative power of artificial intelligence.
