In an insightful discussion on the future of artificial intelligence (AI), Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman elaborated on emerging business opportunities within the AI sector. Speaking with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman during an October episode of the podcast "Masters of Scale," Suleyman underscored the potential for startups to significantly impact AI innovation through specialising in the fine-tuning of AI models.
Suleyman explained that fine-tuning involves calibrating AI models with numerous examples to enhance their performance and minimise inaccuracies, commonly referred to as 'hallucinations'. He highlighted that providing these models with tens of thousands of examples of desirable behaviour is essential for this task. "The good news is that tens of thousands of examples are very accessible to many niche domains or specific verticals," Suleyman asserted. He emphasised that this creates a unique opportunity for startups capable of offering high-quality fine-tuning services for pre-trained AI models.
Suleyman also shared his vision on the trajectory of AI development, predicting that smaller AI models, which are more efficient and affordable, will dominate the future landscape. He suggested that these compact models could become so ubiquitous that they might exist in everyday objects, even as accessible as "a fridge magnet."
The conversation arrives in a context where the financial and logistical demands of training large AI models are significant. Currently, developing such models can cost around $100 million, with advanced iterations potentially reaching billions. This economic factor drives interest in more cost-effective, smaller models. Suleyman's comments are noteworthy, given the increasing scrutiny over the data used in training these models. Several companies, including OpenAI, are embroiled in copyright disputes concerning the data used in the training process.
The ethical implications of AI training data were another critical topic addressed by Suleyman. In a dialogue on whether AI firms had inappropriately leveraged global intellectual property for training purposes, Suleyman suggested that the broad accessibility of content on the internet makes it viable for AI use. "I think that with respect to content that is already on the open web, the social contract of that content since the ’90s has been that it is fair use," he explained, noting exceptions for news sites and publishers that have explicitly opted out.
