A recent report by the Polish Economic Institute (PIE) has revealed significant insights into the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the Polish labour market, highlighting sectors and professions at considerable risk due to technological advancements. According to the report entitled "AI in the Polish Labor Market", approximately 3.68 million Poles, including 2.16 million women, are employed in professions that face the highest risk of replacement by AI technologies. These include positions requiring advanced qualifications such as those held by financiers, lawyers, programmers, mathematicians, certain public officials, secretaries, academic teachers, and managerial staff.

In contrast, some 1.66 million individuals are employed in professions deemed least susceptible to AI disruption. The analysis indicates that AI's presence is relatively less pronounced in fields like agriculture, forestry, hunting, fishing, hospitality, accommodation, and construction, which remain among the least exposed to technological upheaval.

Poland's working population holds diverse opinions on AI's influence on employment, with 25.8% expecting a positive impact on job availability and 33.4% predicting a negative consequence. Ignacy Święcicki from PIE underscores the transformative potential of AI in streamlining and automating tasks, potentially enhancing productivity levels, albeit amidst a backdrop of demographic challenges. By 2035, Poland faces the prospect of a 12.5% reduction in its workforce, increasing pressure to leverage automation to maintain economic momentum.

The report emphasises that women in Poland are disproportionately impacted by AI-induced disruptions, with a significant proportion of female workers employed in vocations vulnerable to automation. Among the 20 most affected professions, 28% of women and 17% of men have been identified as potentially facing AI-induced changes. This discrepancy is partly attributed to women's higher representation in non-physical and more education-intensive roles that are more likely to integrate AI.

PIE's study also points to the varying degrees of AI adoption across economic sectors. Notably, the financial and insurance industries exhibit the highest exposure, reflecting their propensity for AI utilisation in automating processes and enhancing data analysis capabilities. Other highly exposed sectors include professional and technical services and education, whereas the IT industry ranks fourth.

Jakub Witczak of PIE notes the ambiguity surrounding AI's role, questioning whether it will ultimately complement human skills or drive job automation in various industries. Additionally, he highlights existing deterrents to AI adoption, such as low labour costs relative to other European nations, which may reduce the urgency for automation. Concerns about data privacy and security in handling sensitive information on external servers also pose challenges in AI implementation.

The findings provide a comprehensive overview of the impending impact of AI on Poland's workforce, illuminating areas of concern and potential pathways for adaptation as AI technologies continue to evolve. The report suggests a growing need for skills development and an understanding of AI's role within various occupational contexts, highlighting the complexity of navigating this technological shift.
