Optimal Blue, a prominent player in the financial technology arena, is making strides in the deployment of generative AI across its various platforms with a focus on enhancing customers' return on investment (ROI). In a conversation with Sarah Wheeler, Editor in Chief, the company's CEO, Joe Tyrrell, shed light on the company's strategic approach to AI integration, leveraging his extensive experience in the mortgage industry.
Tyrrell, who joined Optimal Blue this year after a tenure as president at ICE Mortgage Technology and chief operating officer at Ellie Mae, brings a comprehensive understanding of the lending landscape. His insights are significantly informed by his previous roles as a loan originator and in operations, providing him with a unique perspective on the needs and challenges faced by lenders.
A key aspect of Optimal Blue’s strategy is ensuring that their technology significantly boosts customer ROI. Tyrrell explained that while their platform offers numerous capabilities, customer utilisation often falls short, thereby not maximising potential returns. The company aims to transform from being a mere vendor to a partner in their clients' business, by focusing on solutions that genuinely solve customer problems and improve their operational processes, without simply automating inefficient ones.
Optimal Blue is notably cautious in its use of generative AI, ensuring that such technologies solve specific problems rather than exacerbating existing ones. Tyrrell, drawing from his background as a chief credit and risk officer, emphasises the importance of avoiding unintended bias in AI solutions. This approach reflects a comprehensive understanding of the long-term ramifications that errors can have in financial products, such as loans.
In discussing the evolution of their technology, Tyrrell highlighted Optimal Blue’s unique position as a true platform in the secondary market, offering a comprehensive suite of tools including pricing, compliance, hedging, and trading solutions. With a profitability assistant already in place, the company utilises generative AI to streamline financial analyses, helping executives in capital markets quickly assess their daily gains or losses, thereby improving efficiency significantly.
Beyond profitability, Optimal Blue also focuses on the front-end processes, enabling loan originators to leverage AI to identify the best loan programmes for their clients. This initiative is currently in a pilot phase, with additional AI assistants slated for unveiling at the company’s upcoming user conference in February.
Tyrrell articulated Optimal Blue’s ultimate goal: to empower lenders to optimise and sell profitable loans. The company provides data-driven insights that allow for real-time loan pricing adjustments based on various borrower metrics, which enhances competitive positioning and profitability. By establishing trust and facilitating widespread adoption of AI at both the front and back ends, the company hopes to streamline loan processes from inception to market execution.
Reflecting on the tech landscape over the past 18 months, Tyrrell remarked on the evolving acceptance and capabilities of large language models (LLMs). Initially, there was hesitation among companies due to fears of inadvertently training public models. However, advancements in LLMs have provided lenders with more tailored options. Tyrrell also noted the importance of delivering value without increasing costs, stating that Optimal Blue, supported by a parent company not bound to quarterly earnings pressures, is committed to enhancing customer ROI through additional value offerings at no extra charge.
As the mortgage industry continues to navigate challenging conditions, Optimal Blue remains focused on supporting its customers through innovative and cost-effective technological solutions.
