Samsung Electronics has announced significant progress in its artificial intelligence (AI) chip supply chain, amid ongoing challenges in the semiconductor market. The South Korean technology titan has been navigating a turbulent economic landscape, marked by a general slowdown in semiconductor earnings. Nonetheless, recent financial reports reveal a promising outlook.

During the third quarter of 2023, Samsung’s operating profit skyrocketed by over 277 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 9.18 trillion won. Despite this impressive year-on-year growth, there was a 12 percent decline from the second quarter's figures. The company attributed this quarterly decrease to one-time expenses, such as the provision of employee incentives within its computer chip division.

Samsung’s semiconductor unit, which had previously recorded losses, reported an operating profit of 3.86 trillion won for the third quarter. While this marks a recovery from last year’s downturn, it represents a decrease from the second quarter's profit of 6.45 trillion won. The dip is primarily due to shifts in the mobile chip sector, where some clients adjusted their inventories, leading to reduced demand.

In contrast, the demand for AI and server chips remains robust. However, Samsung has faced stiff competition from its peers, notably SK Hynix, in the race to manufacture the latest high bandwidth memory chip generation, known as HBM3E, which is crucial for AI applications. SK Hynix has made significant strides in this area, posing a competitive challenge to Samsung.

Despite this, Samsung is making headway in its HBM3E chip development. Jaejune Kim, Vice President of Samsung Electronics, announced that the company has made a “meaningful advance” in the qualification testing phase to supply HBM3E products to a major client, whose identity remains confidential. This development suggests potential growth in sales in the upcoming fourth quarter.

As Samsung continues to respond to market demands and refine its product offerings, these advances signify a positive step forward in its quest to strengthen its foothold in the semiconductor industry, especially within the emergent AI technology space. The upcoming quarter will be telling, as the company aims to convert its R&D advancements into commercial success in a highly competitive field.
