A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on October 28 reveals the potential influence of artificially enhanced smiles on romantic attraction, using speed-dating as an investigative setting. The research was conducted by Pablo Arias-Sarah, an engineer and cognitive scientist at the University of Glasgow, and his colleagues.
The study explores the impact of subtle smile enhancements, achieved through artificial intelligence, during video chat interactions among speed-dating participants. The researchers utilised face filters, a technology widely available to social media users, which can modify facial features in myriad ways. These digital tools can conceal blemishes, alter the appearance of age, and even transform one’s face into creative avatars, such as a talking potato. Despite the widespread use and entertainment value of these applications, the implications of such digital manipulations on human psychology are not well understood, according to Arias-Sarah.
Focused on the human smile—a fundamental, expressive gesture that communicates complex social information, such as attraction, sincerity, and trust—the study investigated how these digital enhancements affected interpersonal attraction. In the experiment, 31 participants engaged in four-minute video chats where their smiles were slightly adjusted to be either more or less prominent. Some interactions featured mutual smile enhancements, others had one participant's smile enhanced while the other's was reduced.
The results underscored the importance of timing and reciprocity in smile enhancements. When both participants’ smiles were synchronously enhanced, they reported higher levels of romantic attraction compared to other scenarios. According to Arias-Sarah, the critical factor was the simultaneous perception of smiling, rather than merely one person's enhanced smile affecting the other.
These findings open up discussions on the ethical implications of using face-altering technology, particularly in digital social interactions. Although participants in this study were informed post-experiment about the manipulation of their facial expressions, such transparency may not always occur as these technologies become more integrated into everyday digital communications.
Moving forward, the research team aims to further investigate the effects of other digital alterations, such as changes to gender, expressivity, gaze, or age, on social interactions including job interviews. This line of inquiry seeks to deepen understanding of the broader social impacts of digital face-tuning technologies as they continue to evolve.
