Amazon has introduced an innovative feature on its Prime Video service, harnessing artificial intelligence to offer viewers concise recaps of their favourite shows. This novel feature, known as X-Ray Recaps, was announced on Monday and is currently available for Amazon's original series. It aims to address a common issue faced by streaming audiences: losing track of episode progress and storylines without risking exposure to spoilers.

Initially, X-Ray Recaps is accessible for all Amazon MGM Studios original productions, including popular titles such as "The Boys," "Upload," "Daisy Jones & the Six," "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," and "The Wheel of Time." The feature, currently in beta, is available on Amazon’s Fire TV devices solely in the United States. Support for additional devices is expected to be rolled out by the end of the year.

Adam Gray, Vice President of Product at Prime Video, emphasized the user-centric approach of X-Ray Recaps, stating that it is designed to help viewers quickly reacquaint themselves with the shows they were watching. This new tool not only provides summaries of memorable scenes and significant plot developments but also allows users to rekindle their initial interest in a series.

The technical underpinnings of X-Ray Recaps stem from Amazon Bedrock, a service part of AWS for developing and scaling AI applications, combined with Amazon SageMaker to create tailored AI models. These technologies work together to process video segments alongside dialogue and subtitles to produce detailed descriptions of key moments and dialogues. Importantly, the system incorporates safety measures, or "guardrails," to ensure that the summaries generated are both spoiler-free and concise.

Users interested in exploring X-Ray Recaps can access it through the Prime Video detail page or during video playback via the X-Ray feature. Once engaged, viewers can opt for various summary types, including an overview of current episodes, progress within a season, or even previous seasons, enabling a highly tailored viewing experience.

X-Ray Recaps builds on Prime Video’s existing array of X-Ray features, which offer fans additional insight into the content they watch, such as trivia, cast details, soundtrack information, and production notes. This step marks another advancement in using AI to enhance streaming platforms, providing a more seamless and informative viewer experience without detracting from the enjoyment of watching.
