In a pioneering move that combines traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology, Diageo, the renowned owner of Johnnie Walker, has embarked on an innovative journey to revolutionise the tasting experience of their Single Malt Special Releases 2024. Leveraging the power of artificial intelligence, Diageo has introduced a 'digitally enabled multi-sensory Scotch whisky journey' through their new initiative, the Special Releases 2024 Tasting Experience.

The ambitious project is centred on the newly released Spirited Xchange Second Edition collection, which was unveiled in September and expertly curated by Diageo’s master blender, Dr Stuart Morrison. At the heart of this experience is a sophisticated technology known as 'FlavorPrintConnect'. This tool ingeniously combines whisky-tasting kits with an AI-enhanced digital masterclass, allowing participants not only to sample the Single Malt Special Releases 2024 range but also to digitally juxtapose their tasting notes with those of friends and Diageo's own master blenders. Accompanying this experience is a rich variety of video content detailing the whiskies and their distilleries, culminating in the creation of a personalised whisky flavour profile for each user.

Jeremiah Ty, who leads breakthrough innovation for luxury at Diageo, described the initiative as a significant leap forward in consumer engagement. Ty stated that by blending physical and digital social experiences through FlavorPrint, consumers can explore the complexities and nuances of single malt Scotch whiskies like never before. He envisions this platform as a gateway to unlocking transformative opportunities across Diageo's entire product range.

The FlavorPrintConnect platform represents an advanced stage of Diageo’s proprietary AI technology. It customises the whisky journey based on unique individual preferences by identifying and aligning flavour profiles, further enhancing the user's tasting experience. It not only enriches the immediate tasting adventure but also fosters deeper consumer engagement by suggesting future explorations within the broader spirits domain.

The comprehensive tasting kit comprises four 200ml whisky samples selected from the range, complete with an array of tasting tools and collector’s glasses. The initiative aligns with contemporary consumer desires as highlighted in Diageo’s Distilled report, which emphasises the trend towards 'neo-hedonism'—a quest for enriched joy in sensory experiences and a break from the ordinary.

This innovative tasting experience will initially be trialed as a limited edition in the UK during the festive season and will be available exclusively through the revamped Malts.com platform. Megan Sirockman, global head of strategy and marketing for The-Bar and Malts.com, described the relaunch of Malts.com as a pivotal moment, providing a digital hub for Diageo’s whisky brands and distilleries. The Special Releases 2024 Tasting Experience is intended to set the tone for this newly enhanced platform, facilitating a seamless connection for whisky enthusiasts with iconic brands like The Singleton, Talisker, Mortlach, and Lagavulin.

Hala Saad, who oversees media content and omnichannel strategy for single malts at Diageo, emphasised the company's commitment to evolving consumer expectations by delivering immersive experiences that fuse digital content with tactile interactions, charting a new course in whisky tasting.

This initiative marks Diageo’s first foray into a consumer-facing trial that integrates AI-driven discovery with immersive content. The specially crafted tasting kit is slated for release on Malts.com starting in November 2024.

In recent advances, Diageo has also employed AI technology in producing 5,000 bottles of Johnnie Walker Black Label, with generative AI playing a role in their creation, underlining the increasing influence of AI across the spirits industry.
