New York Attorney General Letitia James has recently alerted voters across the state about the potential for misinformation stemming from AI chatbots regarding election-related information. This announcement comes as early voting progresses and the general Election Day nears, highlighting the importance of obtaining accurate voting information from reliable sources.
The warning was issued because Attorney General James’ Office of the Attorney General (OAG) conducted tests on multiple AI-powered chatbots by posing typical voting-related questions. The results revealed that these AI systems often provided incorrect information, ranging from voting registration deadlines to early voting locations.
One critical finding involved misinformation about Kings County's early voting procedures. An AI chatbot incorrectly advised that voters could vote at any designated site within the county during the early voting period. While this might be accurate for other areas in New York, New York City voters, which include residents of Kings County, must adhere to specific polling locations assigned based on their residence. Missteps like this could cause confusion and potentially prevent individuals from successfully casting their votes.
The investigation by the OAG outlined other instances where AI chatbots gave misleading instructions, including false voter registration deadlines, which can dissuade eligible voters from registering in time.
In response to these findings, Attorney General James underscores the importance of seeking election-related information from authoritative and official channels. Voters are encouraged to access resources such as the OAG’s website, the New York State Board of Elections, or their local city or county board of elections for verifying polling locations, registration status, and other election details.
To assist voters further, Attorney General James has reminded New Yorkers of the OAG’s Election Protection Hotline, which offers direct support for election-related issues. The hotline, reachable at (866) 390-2992, will be operating extensively throughout the voting period to ensure that voters' concerns are addressed promptly.
With the state in a critical voting period, these alerts serve as a reminder for vigilance against misinformation, and they encourage reliance on trusted and verified sources for election information.
