In a significant development within the global semiconductor industry, Nvidia, the prominent leader in AI computing, has called upon South Korea's SK hynix to expedite the delivery of its next-generation HBM4 chips. This request comes amidst a worldwide shortage of advanced chips that are vital for processing substantial data volumes for AI applications. Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, directed this appeal as part of efforts to bolster AI capabilities, which increasingly depend on high-performance memory solutions.
SK hynix, acknowledged as the world's second-largest memory chip manufacturer, is on the frontline of producing these advanced high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips. These semiconductors are crucial for high-speed data processing, a feature that is especially pertinent for AI technologies spearheaded by companies like Nvidia. On Monday, the push for faster delivery was confirmed by Chey Tae-won, CEO of SK Group, who characterized the expedited timeline as a "happy challenge" for the company.
During an AI summit held in Seoul, Huang participated via video link, praising the current velocity of HBM technology development but emphasising the continual need for enhanced memory performance to meet AI demands. SK hynix has already made significant strides in this regard, projecting to launch 12-layer HBM4 chips by the latter half of 2025.
In addition to this, SK hynix announced plans to ship samples of the cutting-edge 16-layer HBM3E chips by early 2025. This move aligns with the company's strategy to consolidate its position in the booming AI chip market. The advanced HBM3E products, which began mass production of a 12-layer version in September, offer augmented bandwidth speed, power efficiency, and a boost in total capacity due to the addition of extra layers.
Kwak Noh-jung, CEO of SK hynix, highlighted the company's commitment to pioneering "world first" products and underscored the development of 48GB 16-high HBM3E chips, which are expected to have enhanced technological stability. These developments mark a decade since SK hynix first introduced HBM chips in 2013, revolutionising data processing and supporting the complex tasks of generative AI.
While SK hynix maintains its leadership in HBM technology, rival Samsung Electronics has been relatively slower in this segment. This difference in pace has narrowed the market capitalisation gap between Samsung and SK hynix to its slimmest margin in 13 years as of October. Reflecting investor confidence, shares of SK hynix saw a notable increase of 6.48 percent on Monday, indicative of the positive reaction from the market to these strategic advancements and partnerships.
The developments within SK hynix and its collaborative dynamics with Nvidia capture the attention of industry stakeholders as the race to furnish enhanced AI processing capabilities intensifies on a global scale.
