OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence research organisation, is currently grappling with significant challenges due to a shortage of computing resources necessary for developing and deploying its advanced AI models. Recently, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, addressed these concerns during a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, shedding light on why upcoming AI models have encountered delays.
Altman explained that the complexity of these models has increased substantially, necessitating considerably more computing power than before. As a result, OpenAI faces stringent limits on its compute capacity, forcing it to make difficult choices about which projects to prioritise. This shortage is affecting several key initiatives, including the launch of new features and tools.
One such project facing delays is the Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT, aimed at delivering more natural-sounding conversational abilities. According to Altman, the launch of this feature has been postponed due to the constraints on available computing resources. Additionally, there is currently no announced timeline for the release of the latest iteration of DALL-E, OpenAI's renowned image generation tool.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, also participated in the AMA, providing further insights into the company's ongoing projects. He noted that the development of Sora, a video-generation tool, is similarly delayed. The tool still requires enhancement to address various aspects including safety, impersonation issues, and the scalability of compute resources.
Despite these setbacks on the development front, OpenAI has achieved a notable advancement with ChatGPT. The company recently introduced an upgraded version of its chatbot that incorporates real-time web search capabilities. This feature, initially available to ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, enables users to retrieve up-to-date information on diverse subjects such as current weather conditions and stock market data. This update signifies a departure from ChatGPT’s traditional reliance on historical information, presenting a potential challenge to established search engines like Google by providing synthesised answers complete with source citations.

Reports suggest that AI is increasingly used to streamline preparations for events such as Thanksgiving, offering ways to manage budgets, modify recipes based on guest numbers, and accommodate dietary restrictions.
Consumer interest in AI-assisted shopping is also on the rise. Research by PYMNTS indicates that 44% of shoppers express some degree of interest in integrating AI into their shopping process. This inclination is particularly pronounced among younger demographics, with 60% of Generation Z and 54% of millennials showing enthusiasm for AI-supported decision-making in their purchasing activities.
