In a dynamic year for SAP SuccessFactors, the SuccessConnect 2024 event took centre stage in Lisbon, Portugal, to showcase the latest advancements in the SAP HCM suite. This annual gathering, which serves as a convergence point for discussions about trends and innovations within SAP SuccessFactors, unveiled numerous new technologies and strategies set to shape the HR landscape.

Under the leadership of Dan Beck, the president and chief product officer of SAP SuccessFactors, a noticeable shift towards a technology-centred approach has been observed. Beck, whose tenure as the head of SuccessFactors has been marked by an enthusiasm for engineering and technology innovation, is steering the company into new territories with an emphasis on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) more deeply into their products.

AI took a front seat at SuccessConnect 2024, with introductions and teasers of new generative AI capabilities aimed at simplifying HR processes. Chief Revenue Officer Maryann Abbajay highlighted the potential for these AI tools to alleviate routine managerial challenges and foster more strategic thinking. For example, AI-driven prompts are set to enhance employee reviews and provide realistic salary increment expectations.

One of the main attractions was SAP’s new AI copilot, Joule, which promises to transform how HR personnel interact with training materials and customer queries. This copilot is designed to summarise training videos and resolve payslip inquiries, thereby streamlining training and administrative responsibilities.

Dan Beck clarified the company's stance on AI’s evolution, noting the importance of not just large language models but also smaller language models and agentic AI. However, he stated that SAP's approach does not include launching distinct agentic AI, emphasising that these agents are integral to the functioning of AI copilots like Joule rather than standalone products.

Alongside AI, SAP SuccessFactors is focusing on removing AI biases, with a dedicated team in Singapore working to ensure that their AI solutions are devoid of discrimination—a reflection of SAP's long-standing commitment to governance, risk, and compliance in AI.

The event also highlighted SAP SuccessFactors' strategic partnerships and implementations. Spanish company Frit Ravich and retail giant Ahold Delhaize were noted for leveraging AI tools within the SAP HCM suite to comply with stringent regulations. Meanwhile, BT Group's rapid adoption of Joule showcased the practical benefits and swift integration possible within enterprise environments.

Beyond AI, other notable updates at SuccessConnect 2024 included new integration capabilities introduced with the acquisition of WalkMe, a digital adoption platform. Pre-built content from WalkMe is expected to enhance SAP SuccessFactors solutions by mid-2025, bridging existing workflows and improving user experience.

Further developments in the talent intelligence hub allow users to aggregate and harmonise data from third-party solutions, providing a comprehensive skills view for organisations. Initial partners for these integrations include Beamery, Degreed, and TechWolf, among others.

Additionally, the conference shed light on future integrations, including a significant collaboration with Microsoft Teams. This partnership aims for a pioneering bidirectional integration between Joule and Microsoft’s Copilot, anticipated to streamline data usage and interaction across the platforms.

SuccessConnect 2024 served as a crucial platform for SAP SuccessFactors to outline its forward-looking strategies and innovations, reaffirming its role in transforming human capital management through technology. The event underscored not only the immediate impact of AI-driven solutions but also the broader potential for these technologies to redefine HR processes across the globe.
