Amazon has introduced a new feature, X-Ray Recaps, designed to enhance the viewing experience for its Prime Video customers, particularly those who find it challenging to recall plot details after long breaks between TV series seasons. X-Ray Recaps utilises artificial intelligence to generate concise summaries of episodes, entire seasons, and even specific segments of episodes, helping viewers to quickly refresh their memory.
This innovative feature is currently being rolled out in beta form to Fire TV users. It is integrated within the broader X-Ray experience, a tool that provides information about cast, crew, music, and trivia, sourced from IMDb, an Amazon-owned company. The X-Ray Recaps can be accessed by tapping on the screen during video playback or by visiting the detail page of a show, where a Recap icon appears next to the episode number. Clicking on this icon opens a new panel, offering users the option to generate recaps for the episode being viewed, the current season, or previous seasons.
The technology behind X-Ray Recaps employs Amazon Bedrock models and custom AI models, which are trained using Amazon SageMaker. These models analyse video segments, subtitles, and dialogue to summarise key moments, ensuring that the summaries are spoiler-free and concise. This initiative aims to minimise the hassle of viewers having to rewind episodes or seek out summaries online when they forget plot details.
Adam Gray, Prime Video's Vice President of Product, explained the motivation behind this development: "We're directly addressing a common problem customers face when streaming content: forgetting where they left off. With this context-aware functionality, Prime Video will deliver summaries of memorable moments and important plot points so our customers can quickly jump back into what they were watching."
Initially, X-Ray Recaps will be available for all Amazon MGM Studios Original series, including popular titles such as "Daisy Jones and the Six," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith," "The Wheel of Time," "Upload," and "The Boys." Amazon plans to expand this feature to devices beyond Fire TV by the end of the year, further enhancing accessibility for a broader range of users.
This development marks Amazon's ongoing efforts to remain competitive in the streaming market, offering innovative solutions to improve user experience. As the feature extends to more devices, it is expected to become a valuable tool for series enthusiasts on Amazon Prime Video.
