Auto Trader, a prominent name in the UK's online car selling industry, has introduced a new AI-powered platform aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of vehicle retailing. This initiative, known as Co-Driver, represents a strategic move by the company to leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to streamline the preparation of car and van listings, a task that currently averages about 30 minutes.

The development of Co-Driver is part of a multi-phase release strategy that will eventually see the full suite of its features available through the Auto Trader Portal. Furthermore, these capabilities can be integrated into third-party technology systems via Auto Trader Connect, providing flexibility and enhanced functionality for retailers.

Among the first batch of Co-Driver features set to launch, Smart Image Management will be introduced this month. This tool is designed to optimise the arrangement of vehicle images based on prospective buyers’ preferences. It provides categorisation and checks for missing images, thereby improving the visual appeal and completeness of online listings.

In the early months of the following year, Auto Trader plans to roll out two additional features. One is AI-Generated Descriptions, which autonomously creates comprehensive listings for vehicles. These descriptions are enriched with Vehicle Identification Number specifications, directly obtained from manufacturers, and are informed by an extensive database of over 600 million combined search minutes per month to tailor content to customer preferences.

The other feature is Key Selling Points, which determines and highlights the most compelling attributes of a vehicle. This might include specific features unique to a model or even individual characteristics of a particular car.

The development of the Co-Driver platform is a product of Auto Trader's extensive investment in AI over the last decade. A dedicated team of more than 400 data scientists and engineers has built upon a foundation of existing AI and machine learning applications, which are already aiding retailers. These existing tools support retailers by providing insights for sourcing and stocking based on Market Health and Retail Rating metrics.

Auto Trader, a FTSE 100 company founded in 1977, is a leading entity in the UK used car marketplace. Its latest annual report for 2024 indicates a consistent revenue growth of 14% over the past two years, with earnings surpassing £570 million. This fiscal health is reflected in a robust annual profit margin of 26% and a current share price boost of over 20% for the year, reaching 847.8p, following a downturn in April.

Karolina Edwards-Smajda, Auto Trader’s chief product officer, highlighted the significant leap forward that Co-Driver represents in enhancing retail performance. She emphasised the capacity of these solutions to address contemporary challenges faced by partners while simultaneously fostering superior retail practices.

Auto Trader's integration of AI mirrors broader trends within the e-commerce sector, where major players like Amazon and eBay have already employed machine learning technologies to tailor user experiences through personalised recommendations. This move aligns Auto Trader with the industry’s shift towards incorporating advanced technologies to improve service delivery and drive business growth.
