At the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October, Ditch, an AI-powered navigation application, marked its first anniversary by unveiling a significant new feature known as Smart ETA. This innovative enhancement is designed to offer far more precise estimated times of arrival for boating enthusiasts by taking into account variables often ignored by traditional ETA calculators, such as no-wake zones and specific boat cruising speeds.

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, a prominent event in the marine calendar, provided the ideal platform for Ditch to introduce its latest technological advancements. The Smart ETA feature promises to refine the accuracy of arrival predictions, thereby alleviating stress and improving travel planning for users. Unlike conventional systems, Ditch's new update incorporates real-time data and adjustments, offering users up-to-the-minute insights into their travel dynamics.

In addition to Smart ETA, Ditch also rolled out a new live navigation view. This feature provides users with minute-by-minute updates regarding route distance, time to arrival, and speed over the ground (SOG). The integration of these capabilities seeks to enhance the user experience by delivering comprehensive and immediate navigation information directly to the user.

Owen Davies, co-founder of Ditch, expressed his enthusiasm for the launch during the show. He highlighted his dissatisfaction with the inaccuracy of traditional ETA calculations and the common frustration boaters face when such predictions fail to account for slow zones. "It always bugged us that ETAs were never quite right," Davies remarked. "You know, leaving the marina, you’re stuck at 4 knots for a bit — and that throws off your whole trip. I’d find myself doing mental math on the water, trying to figure out the real arrival time. We wanted to take that frustration away."

Davies further emphasized the significance of Smart ETA as a starting point, setting the stage for even more advanced developments by 2025. He envisions integrating real-time data and predictive algorithms to enhance the accuracy and reliability of ETAs.

Central to Ditch's navigation offerings is its patented Smart Path technology, which uses AI to chart the safest possible routes. By processing billions of data points, including historical Automatic Identification System (AIS) records, the app enables captains to visualise previously traversed maritime paths directly on the chart, enhancing situational awareness and travel safety.

The introduction of Smart ETA and enhanced live navigation reflects Ditch's ongoing commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence in maritime navigation, offering a sophisticated, data-driven alternative to traditional solutions. This app aims to revolutionise how boating enthusiasts approach navigation, simplifying and refining the user experience on the water.
