HCLTech, a prominent Indian IT service provider, is set to enhance Singapore's AI innovation landscape by establishing a new artificial intelligence (AI) lab in 2024. This initiative marks another step in the city-state’s ambitious drive to position itself as a key player in AI technology in the Asia-Pacific region.

The forthcoming AI lab will be part of HCLTech's extensive global network, joining existing facilities in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and India. This network serves as a bridge between cutting-edge AI technologies and practical business applications across a variety of industries.

Vijay Guntur, HCLTech's global chief technology officer and head of ecosystems, elaborated on the company's strategy to tailor existing technologies to meet specific business needs. Guntur highlighted collaborative efforts with clients to develop minimum viable products that, when proven successful, are scaled into full production, offering industry-specific, repeatable solutions. One such active project includes an AI platform in collaboration with a US healthcare provider, designed to support clinicians in diagnosis through the utilisation of curated medical documents and sophisticated language models.

Significantly, subsequent updates to this platform have been tailored to increase healthcare accessibility in rural regions via an AI-driven conversational agent. This agent utilises AI-enabled PCs to facilitate local data processing. This incrementally adapted platform demonstrates HCLTech’s commitment to modifying solutions based on varied customer requirements and expanding its applicability across diverse healthcare scenarios.

Apart from healthcare, the Singapore AI lab will tackle challenges encountered in the manufacturing sector and beyond, drawing upon the company's prior successes. For instance, HCLTech has previously developed a predictive AI tool for a consumer electronics company, which accurately identifies potential product defects during production. This innovation has helped the manufacturer reduce costs and enhance customer satisfaction by preventing defective products from being shipped.

Guntur also highlighted the company's commitment to aiding clients in navigating their AI integration journeys, tackling issues such as identifying relevant use cases and proving return on investment. While some AI outcomes, like predicting medical events, pose valuation challenges, Guntur pointed out the measurable impact in fields such as marketing, where AI significantly enhances content generation and campaign execution.

Moreover, HCLTech is leveraging AI internally to upgrade its own processes, such as modernising legacy systems and improving IT operations. In particular, generative AI is making strides in transforming software testing by enabling engineers to draft test cases in plain English, thus automating the test script generation. This has led to more efficient testing practices and the opportunity for increased cycle testing pre-launch.

While discussing potential collaboration between HCLTech’s AI labs and HCLSoftware’s product development teams, Guntur indicated that while the synergy is currently nascent, there has been an uptick in collaborative discussions, particularly around generative AI. This cross-team interaction opens up possibilities for lab innovations to eventually inform and enhance commercial products.

In addition to technological advancements, the AI lab initiative in Singapore contributes to HCLTech's mission to cultivate AI talent. Through partnerships with Nanyang Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic, HCLTech plans to train and potentially employ around 50 students and mid-career professionals over the coming years. Tan Kiat How, Singapore’s senior minister of state for the Ministry of Digital Development and Information and Ministry of National Development, praised these partnerships. He noted their role in providing students with practical experience and employment opportunities, while also providing HCLTech with a skilfully trained workforce. He also encouraged other global companies to consider hiring from the polytechnic talent pool, recognising the strong technical expertise and problem-solving skills these students possess.

This development highlights HCLTech’s multifaceted approach, bolstering AI innovation and skill development in Singapore, while simultaneously fostering collaborations that extend AI capabilities across diverse sectors.
