WSO2 Unveils New Updates to Enhance API Management in AI-Driven and Kubernetes-Integrated Environments

Colombo, Sri Lanka – WSO2, a prominent player in API management platforms, has introduced a suite of updates to bolster the management of APIs amid a technology landscape that increasingly harnesses artificial intelligence (AI) and Kubernetes. This announcement includes the release of WSO2 API Manager 4.4, WSO2 API Platform for Kubernetes (APK) 1.2, and WSO2 API Microgateway 3.2, all of which are now accessible to users.

Addressing the technological advancements, Christopher Davey, Vice President and General Manager of API Management at WSO2, explained the significance of these updates. “As organisations pursue competitive advantages through pioneering digital experiences, a balanced investment in cutting-edge technologies and enhancing the productivity of software development teams is crucial. With newly added capabilities for managing AI services as APIs and the extended support for Kubernetes as the preferred platform for digital innovation, WSO2 API Manager and WSO2 APK aim to significantly enhance developers' experiences, all within a future-proof framework suited to their continuously evolving needs,” stated Davey.

A standout feature of the updates is the newly introduced Egress API Management capability. This innovative feature empowers developers to manage both internal and external AI services as APIs. The capability encompasses full life cycle API management, governance, as well as built-in support for providers such as OpenAI, Mistral AI, and Microsoft Azure OpenAI. This outbound gateway capability enforces several policies, ensuring secure and efficient access to AI models. Furthermore, it aids companies in managing costs by controlling AI traffic via backend rate limiting and subscription-level rate limiting of AI APIs.

Moreover, in a bid to meet the rising demand of APIs operating on Kubernetes, WSO2 has released an updated version of the WSO2 API Microgateway. This cloud-native gateway for microservices is designed to improve scalability while ensuring governance, reliability, and security are maintained. WSO2 APK has also been updated to align with the gRPC Route specification, which enhances integration within Kubernetes environments and provides improved control over gRPC services. The latest iteration of WSO2 APK further includes new traffic filters for HTTP Routes, offering increased flexibility and precision in routing HTTP traffic.

Additionally, WSO2 has made strides in enhancing developer productivity. Improvements in API discoverability come from updates to the unified control plane in the WSO2 API Manager. Developers can now search for APIs using the content in API definition files directly in the Developer Portal and Publisher portal.

To further boost security and access control, the updated control plane now offers the option to configure separate mTLS authentication settings for production and sandbox environments. The latest release also incorporates support for personal access tokens (PAT), providing secure and time-limited authentication to APIs without requiring a username and password.

These comprehensive updates by WSO2 are set to significantly impact how organisations manage APIs in an ecosystem increasingly driven by AI capabilities and Kubernetes integration, offering a robust solution for modern technological challenges.
