MHP, a renowned management and IT consultancy, has unveiled an extensive international mobility study titled "AI as Game Changer: The New Driving Force of the Automotive Industry". Conducted in Reading, UK and Ludwigsburg, Germany, this study explores the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the automotive industry. By surveying 4,700 participants from around the globe, including respondents from China, the US, Germany, the UK, Italy, Sweden, and Poland, the study provides an insightful analysis of user expectations and behaviours regarding AI in the automotive sector.
The study highlights AI's role as a catalyst for the next development phase in both vehicles and automobile manufacturing. It identifies AI's applications in enhancing autonomous driving features, personalised entertainment, driver assistance systems, intelligent route planning, and predictive maintenance as areas of significant interest among participants. Despite this enthusiasm, a mere 23 percent of European drivers expressed willingness to pay additional charges for these AI-driven features, compared to a higher willingness at 39 percent among Chinese participants.
The reluctance to pay for AI in cars among European respondents reflects broader scepticism. Only 23 percent of Europeans view AI in automotive applications as a clear opportunity, contrasting with 48 percent of Chinese participants. Additionally, the study notes a disparity in awareness, with over 80 percent of Chinese respondents understanding AI's use in vehicles compared to only 54 percent in Europe, indicating a knowledge gap that car manufacturers might need to address.
Beyond consumer perceptions, the study emphasises the strategic importance of AI for automotive companies in enhancing their competitive edge. AI technology can innovate across the entire value chain, from development to production. It offers opportunities in pattern recognition for quality management, data harmonisation for better insights, decision-making support systems, and AI-enhanced communication through chatbots and voice recognition technologies.
Marcus Willand, a partner at MHP and one of the study's authors, stresses the importance of AI in potentially influencing buying decisions due to perceived enhancements in safety and comfort, although European buyers exhibit notable hesitance and price sensitivity. Dr. Nils Schaupensteiner, another key contributor to the study, highlights the necessity for automotive companies to design AI-driven offerings with tangible benefits, enhancing profitability through innovative business models and improved services. Notably, customers tend to trust established car manufacturers more than tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft in the realm of automotive AI.
The study also underscores that the integration of AI within companies extends beyond vehicles alone, offering extensive benefits in development and production sectors. MHP provides detailed strategies and models illustrating how AI can be leveraged for operational improvements, positioning AI not only as a technological advancement but as a strategic imperative in the automotive industry's future trajectory.
Augustin Friedel, senior manager and co-author, urges original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers to explore the vast opportunities AI presents across their value chains, despite acknowledging the complexity involved in its implementation.
