Apple has launched the latest iteration of its mobile operating system, iOS 18.2, to public beta users, marking a significant advancement in the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) into their technologies. The new update, grouping technologies under the brand name "Apple Intelligence" (abbreviated as "AI"), introduces a range of features including the AI emoji generator app Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT integration with Siri, and advanced visual search capabilities using the iPhone 16 cameras.

This release, initially available only to developers, is now accessible to public beta users, although some features require enlistment on a waitlist, adding a minor hurdle for those eager to explore the updates.

Apple Intelligence is driven by large language models, enhancing the functionality of Siri and providing users with advanced text writing and proofreading abilities across various applications. Additionally, the new capabilities allow Siri to interact more dynamically with apps, such as retrieving information and enabling tasks based on what appears on the screen.

During Apple’s developer conference in June, the company disclosed plans to introduce its AI technology into specific app categories. These include apps related to books, browsers, cameras, document readers, file management, journals, mail, photos, presentations, spreadsheets, whiteboards, and word processors. This move is also open to third-party developers, who can incorporate Apple Intelligence capabilities into their applications, potentially broadening the system’s appeal and utility if widely adopted.

Key new features include Image Playground, which serves as a standalone app allowing users to create images through prompts. Genmoji enables the customization of emojis via a similar prompt-based system, while Image Wand offers the ability to transform simple sketches in notes into AI-rendered images.

The integration of ChatGPT with Siri represents another significant upgrade, providing a more powerful virtual assistant experience. Users can leverage the ChatGPT extension to draft text, answer queries, and even create visual content. For subscribers, advanced capabilities of ChatGPT are included, offering a comprehensive set of tools which further extend Siri's functionality. This integration benefits both Apple and ChatGPT, expanding ChatGPT's exposure to the iPhone user base while enhancing Siri’s intelligence capabilities.

iPhone 16 introduces a new feature, Visual Intelligence, accessed via the Camera Control button. This tool allows users to identify and search for real-world objects and locations through their camera lens, adding a practical, exploratory dimension to everyday use.

However, some features like those involving image creation require users first to enable Apple Intelligence and then register for access, introducing a waiting period that Apple has yet to specify. This measure reflects ongoing concerns surrounding AI safety, as evidenced by the creation of non-family-friendly content using the Genmoji app, and represents Apple’s cautious approach to deploying these features at scale.

Prior to iOS 18.2, Apple had already brought AI-driven writing tools and notification summaries in iOS 18.1, along with a visually refreshed Siri that presents with glowing edges on the screen.

In conjunction with the iOS 18.2 beta release, Apple has also made available public betas for iPadOS 18.2, macOS Sequoia 15.2, and tvOS 18.2, indicating a broad push to integrate AI capabilities across its diverse range of products.
