Biotia, a pioneering force in genomic-based infectious disease diagnostics, has achieved a significant breakthrough by obtaining New York State approval for a new test designed to assist individuals suffering from chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs). The BIOTIA-ID Urine NGS Assay utilises advanced genomics and artificial intelligence to accurately identify the pathogens causing UTIs, aiming to improve patient outcomes by enabling more precise and rapid treatments.

UTIs rank among the most frequently encountered infections, impacting over seven million individuals annually, with a significant portion being women. These infections not only cause discomfort but can also escalate into more severe health issues, such as sepsis, if not treated properly. While traditional diagnostic methods like urine cultures and dipsticks are common, they often involve longer wait times and lack the precision needed for complex cases.

Unlike conventional UTI tests, the BIOTIA-ID UTI test offers enhanced sensitivity and specificity, boasting a 97% sensitivity rate and 99% specificity rate. This innovation is aimed at addressing the shortcomings of other tests, which sometimes yield false positives or negatives. It is especially useful for identifying urogenital pathogens that traditional culture tests may miss.

Dr. Niamh O’Hara, CEO and Co-Founder of Biotia, expressed the potential impact of this development, stating, "Precision infectious disease diagnostics is not just about improving individual patient care; it is about transforming the healthcare landscape. By providing accurate, detailed, and timely information, we can move towards a future where treatment is truly personalized and public health is protected."

Following its approval, Biotia is collaborating with medical institutions and laboratories to incorporate the BIOTIA-ID test into their existing diagnostic processes and is working with insurance providers to extend its availability. Currently, the test is accessible for clinicians to order within New York, with plans to expand its availability nationwide.

The BIOTIA-ID test is particularly beneficial for patients experiencing chronic, recurring, or complicated UTIs, as well as those with compromised immune systems or who face challenges in obtaining an accurate diagnosis and timely treatment. Dr. O’Hara emphasised that while this test is not intended for routine UTIs, it offers significant advantages for more complex cases that impact quality of life and contribute to serious conditions like sepsis, accounting for 30% of such cases.

In clinical studies, presented at ID Week 2024, the BIOTIA-ID UTI test demonstrated its effectiveness by accurately identifying pathogens in 60% of samples where traditional methods were inadequate. Moreover, many of the patients in these studies had been prescribed antimicrobials that were ineffective for the pathogens identified by the Biotia test, highlighting its potential role in avoiding inappropriate treatments.

The advent of the BIOTIA-ID Urine NGS Assay marks a notable advancement in the diagnosis and management of UTIs, promising improved healthcare outcomes through its precision and speed. As Biotia works towards broader implementation, this test could redefine the approach to treating chronic and complicated urinary infections.
