A significant majority of IT professionals in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) have expressed support for increased government regulation around artificial intelligence (AI), particularly concerning security and privacy issues. This sentiment emerged from a recent survey conducted by SolarWinds, which involved nearly 700 IT professionals, including 297 participants from the EMEA region.

The survey results highlight the pressing concerns surrounding AI. Security emerged as the foremost issue, with more than two-thirds (67%) of respondents advocating for government action to address security vulnerabilities associated with AI technologies. This indicates a strong demand for regulatory measures aimed at ensuring that AI implementations do not compromise security protocols.

Privacy concerns also feature prominently, with 60% of the EMEA IT professionals surveyed calling for stricter regulations to protect sensitive information handled by AI systems. Respondents expressed unease about the potential for data breaches and the misuse of personal information and emphasised the importance of safeguarding privacy in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Furthermore, the survey indicates that misinformation is another significant concern, with 60% of respondents seeing government intervention as necessary to limit the distribution of false or misleading information through AI platforms. Nearly half (47%) of the participants also highlighted the need for regulations to ensure transparency and ethical conduct in AI development.

These findings align with various initiatives currently underway across the region, as governments attempt to address such concerns. Noteworthy examples include the European Union's AI Act, which seeks to establish a comprehensive legal framework for AI, Dubai's announcement of its Universal Blueprint for AI which includes appointing a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer in each government body, and Saudi Arabia's plan to invest US$40 billion in AI to stimulate technological advancements.

Despite these regulatory efforts, the survey reveals a notable scepticism regarding data quality, a critical component of successful AI implementation. Only 33% of EMEA respondents express a high level of trust in the quality and training data used in AI systems. Additionally, 41% of IT leaders who have encountered AI-related issues attribute these to algorithmic errors caused by biased or inadequate data.

Data quality is identified as a significant barrier to AI adoption, positioned behind security and cost-related challenges. This scepticism extends to database readiness, with only a third (33%) of IT professionals expressing confidence in their organisations' capacity to meet the increasing data demands of AI technologies. This lack of confidence is further illustrated by the 43% of respondents who believe their companies are not progressing swiftly enough in implementing AI, often due to persistent data quality challenges.

Rob Johnson, Vice President and Global Head of Solutions Engineering at SolarWinds, commented on the cautious approach IT leaders are taking towards AI. He acknowledged the inherent challenges that accompany the rapid evolution of technology, particularly around security and privacy, but stressed the importance of proactive measures by organisations. He advised enhancing data hygiene, enforcing strong AI ethics, and assembling skilled teams to lead AI deployment efforts as essential steps to maximising AI's potential and ensuring compliance with emerging regulations.

In conclusion, the survey underscores a widespread call among EMEA IT professionals for greater regulatory oversight of AI to address critical security, privacy, and misinformation concerns, amidst ongoing debates on ethical practices in AI deployment. As regulatory frameworks continue to evolve, organisations are urged to improve their data management practices to facilitate the trust and effective implementation of AI technologies.
