Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius Showcases Upcoming Electric CLA Sedan, Aiming to Rival Tesla Model 3
Mercedes-Benz has offered an intriguing glimpse into its forthcoming electric CLA sedan, set to compete with the Tesla Model 3. In a video released by the company, CEO Ola Källenius takes the driver's seat at Mercedes' test track, providing a tantalising preview of the vehicle expected to hit the market in 2025 as a 2026 model.
The new CLA, described as a sporty coupe-sedan, will be the flagship of a new series of cars and crossovers built on Mercedes' innovative electrified MMA platform. Apart from the electric version Källenius drove, the model will also feature hybrid variants, diversifying the options for potential buyers.
In the video, Källenius offers a sneak peek at the car's headlamp design, pulling off the disguise to reveal stylish star-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) that echo the LEDs on the rear of the E-Class. While the footage avoids delving deeply into technicalities, it does provide viewers with a clearer visual of the production version following the 2023 CLA Concept.
Key design elements of the CLA include frameless glass doors, which lend it a sophisticated coupe aesthetic, and a vast panoramic roof reminiscent of the Tesla Model 3. This design feature floods the interior with light, complementing the luxurious, darkly upholstered cabin.
One of the standout technological features introduced in the CLA is Mercedes' new AI voice assistant, integrated with the MB.OS software premiering with this model. The tech aims to enhance driving safety by reducing the need for interaction with touchscreen controls. Källenius confidently stated, “Every digital feature you can possibly think of, you’ll probably find it in this car.”
The CLA's engineering includes a two-speed transmission, promising exceptional efficiency, although Källenius did not specify the motor and battery details or provide range figures. However, based on prior announcements about the CLA concept, the vehicle is expected to incorporate 800-volt electrics and support 250 kW charging, a capability that would allow the car to add approximately 248 miles (400 km) of range in just 15 minutes of charging.
The CLA concept was originally powered by a lightweight 235 horsepower (175 kW / 238 PS) electric motor, boasting a driving range exceeding 466 miles (750 km). Mercedes plans to offer multiple power levels, catering to a variety of performance preferences. Additionally, the hybrid version will feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine developed by China's Geely, expanding its appeal with additional eco-friendly options.
As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, Mercedes' new CLA sedan seeks to carve out its niche, positioning itself as a strong contender against established players like the Tesla Model 3. With its blend of style, technology, and performance, the CLA aims to redefine luxury electric driving for its customers.
