Skillsgapp, a South Carolina-based company specialising in workforce development and education through innovative technology, is marking its fourth year of operation with significant advancements. Founded in 2020 by CEO Tina Zwolinski and Chief Marketing Officer Cynthia Jenkins, the Greenville-headquartered company has been at the forefront of bridging the skills gap through their innovative approach to learning and career development.

Since its inception, Skillsgapp's flagship product, Skillionaire Games, has connected tech-savvy youth with potential career pathways, winning acclaim for its engaging approach that combines education with gaming. Numerous iterations of their game-based learning model have been introduced since their launch, with a recent focus on the health care sector highlighting the company’s versatility and intent to cater to current job market demands.

In a recent initiative for National Surgical Technologists Week, a partnership with South Carolina's ETV invited residents to engage with the game "Healing Agent," which allowed players to simulate roles in healthcare professions such as surgical technicians. Players, through their avatars, could gain insights into real-life job scenarios, including potential salaries and educational programmes available, such as those at Greenville Technical College.

"We connect youth to life-changing careers through game-changing play," said Cynthia Jenkins, explaining the mission behind Skillsgapp's endeavours. Jenkins noted the implementation of the Proteus effect in their games, which leverages psychological attributes allowing players to assume the roles and characteristics of their avatars, fostering engagement and learning.

Furthering their mission, Skillsgapp has begun integrating generative artificial intelligence into their platforms, facilitated by funding from the National Science Foundation. This advancement aims to tailor the educational experience by considering in-game player performance, geographic location, and personal preferences, thereby guiding players towards local career pathways more effectively. The integration of AI is currently being trialled in South Carolina, allowing the system to potentially serve the educational needs of over 400,000 students across the state.

Skillsgapp’s platform offers a bias-free recruiting tool for employers, providing visibility into player performance. This feature, combined with their dynamic suite of games focusing on sectors such as cybersecurity, health care, life sciences, and advanced manufacturing, proposes a holistic solution to mitigate the skills gap and reduce employee churn.

Operating with a remote team of 10 employees stationed across South Carolina, Georgia, and California, Zwolinski and Jenkins drive Skillsgapp’s mission by drawing from an extensive repertoire of industry knowledge and technological innovation. As the company continues to expand its game offerings, it remains steadfast in its commitment to removing bias and enhancing accessibility to career opportunities for young individuals, especially those from under-resourced communities.

Skillsgapp has thus established itself as a significant player in the burgeoning field of edtech, reshaping how young people interact with and perceive potential career opportunities through the power of immersive, experiential gaming.
