Walmart Leverages AI and GenAI to Enhance Holiday Shopping Experience

Walmart, the retail giant, is making strides in transforming the holiday shopping experience by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI) technologies. These advancements aim to streamline the process for customers, from the initial product discovery phase through to purchasing, delivery, and returns, offering a more personalized and efficient journey.

Personalized Shopping Experience

On the Walmart.com platform, AI technology is being harnessed to deliver a highly personalized shopping experience. This year, as customers peruse the site, AI-driven algorithms will intuitively understand their preferences. GenAI will then predict and present tailored content, such as deals and new releases, in line with those preferences. For instance, U.S. customers with a history of searching for board games might see targeted promotions and gift suggestions related to that interest.

Looking to the future, Walmart plans to employ this technology to develop increasingly customized homepages, with an eye towards implementing even broader personalization in international markets. In Mexico, a new feature is set to roll out that provides a comprehensive array of personalized product recommendations for the festive season.

In addition, Walmart is exploring AI for influencer collaboration. The company is using AI to identify and evaluate influencers, subsequently integrating their content onto the Walmart.com homepage. This initiative allows customers to discover items endorsed by trending creators.

Enhanced Shopping Tools

The retailer is also expanding the capabilities of a GenAI-powered shopping assistant, currently in beta testing. This tool is designed to assist customers in discovering, analysing, and selecting products suited to their individual needs. Functioning similarly to a real-life shopping assistant, it offers a conversational interaction style that bolsters customer confidence in their purchasing decisions.

Moreover, Walmart has introduced GenAI search tools that facilitate more intuitive browsing online and via its app. By using specific queries such as "What’s a good gift for a five-year-old boy?", customers receive relevant, cross-category suggestions. This functionality promotes a broader range of ideas beyond what conventional search parameters might yield.

Additional technological enhancements include GenAI-driven product reviews, summarizations, and comparisons. For instance, when a customer searches for a smart TV, Walmart’s AI-driven comparison tool assists in evaluating different models, simplifying the decision-making process.

Sam’s Club AI Initiative

Walmart's subsidiary, Sam’s Club, has fully implemented an AI and computer vision-powered exit technology across all locations. This system automatically scans items as members exit, validating purchases without manual intervention. Deemed to be among the largest consumer-facing AI deployments in the retail sector, this innovation significantly reduces checkout times and smoothens the entire customer experience.

Reports indicate that where this system has been activated, over 64% of members are experiencing faster, stress-free exits, achieving a reduction in wait times by 21%.

Expanded Delivery Services

On the logistics front, Walmart has broadened its holiday delivery scope to include approximately 12 million additional U.S. households. This expansion is made possible by an AI-driven geospatial platform that optimises delivery operations. By integrating transactional data with comprehensive network insights and external metrics, Walmart’s unique geo-grid system tailors delivery regions for each store based on parameters such as slot availability, drive time, and store capacity, moving beyond traditional distance-based models.

Through these technological enhancements, Walmart continues to reshape the holiday shopping landscape, offering a seamless and customised experience for customers globally.
