In the rapidly evolving world of technology and travel, Booking Holdings is positioning itself at the forefront of innovation by integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI) across its vast suite of services. As disclosed by Glenn Fogel, the President and CEO of Booking Holdings, the company is proactively experimenting with AI across its five flagship brands: Booking.com, Priceline, Kayak, Agoda, and OpenTable. This strategic move aims to enhance customer interaction, streamline operational functions, and prepare for the future of travel technology.

During a recent call with investors, Fogel elaborated on the company's extensive AI initiatives. He emphasised that generative AI is still in its nascent stages, and there is a considerable journey ahead to fully understand consumer preferences and the potential applications of this emerging technology. However, the current phase of exploration is crucial for the company to test and refine its tools.

Booking.com has made notable strides with its AI trip planner, initially launched in June 2023. This tool has already facilitated millions of customer interactions, indicating a promising direction for AI in trip planning. Recently, enhancements were made to enable the chatbot to handle property-specific queries more effectively and streamline the search for amenities using natural language. Additionally, Booking.com is working on hotel-facing AI tools designed to aid properties in responding to traveller enquiries, thereby increasing response rates and improving the onboarding process for new clients.

Priceline, another key brand of Booking Holdings, introduced its AI chatbot Penny Voice, an update to the existing chatbot, which now supports voice interactions. This innovation is expected to assist travellers with hotel search management and bookings, adapting to the users’ preferences through real-time voice responses. Fogel expressed anticipation for Penny’s evolution as the company gains further insights from ongoing enhancements.

For Agoda, based in Singapore, generative AI has been adopted across more than 120 applications ranging from customer service to software development. The focus has been on automating product development, resulting in a significant increase in productivity and efficiency in the development processes.

Meanwhile, OpenTable has integrated an AI voicebot developed by PolyAI to assist client restaurants with managing reservations and guest queries. Added in September, this tool automates routine telephonic interactions, thereby enhancing the reservation experience for both customers and restaurants. OpenTable also partnered with Salesforce for its Agentforce platform, which automates various customer service tasks, allowing agents to focus on more complex enquiries.

Kayak has also embraced AI with its ‘Ask Kayak’ trip planning tool, launched in March, and the PriceCheck feature, a price comparison tool that helps users find the best deals on flights. Kayak is exploring further uses of AI to boost internal productivity and has a connection through Microsoft Copilot for real-time flight information, enhancing its offerings for users of Bing.

As Booking Holdings continues this ambitious integration of AI, it is clear that the company aims to redefine the travel experience, making it smarter and more efficient for users worldwide. While these technologies are still in their early phases, the potential improvements in customer service, operational efficiency, and innovative offerings promise an exciting future for both the company and its customers.
