Duolingo has unveiled a novel approach to integrating artificial intelligence into its educational platforms by utilizing a generative AI chatbot named "Lily". This unveiling took place during the company's third-quarter earnings call on Wednesday, where Lily briefly replaced CEO and co-founder Luis von Ahn to present a summary of Duolingo's financial results. This demonstration was intended to showcase the company's innovative use of AI to enhance its language learning tools.
"Lily," designed to be a "sassy" conversational partner, allows users to practice language skills in an unscripted and spontaneous manner, helping learners build confidence in speaking foreign languages. The video summary Lily produced reportedly took just seven minutes to create, emphasizing the efficiency and capability of generative AI in corporate communications.
Chief Financial Officer Matthew Skaruppa elaborated on this AI integration, stating, "We wanted to give an example of how generative AI is positively impacting more and more aspects of our business. We’re using it to make our product more fun, engaging, and effective through features like Video Call with Lily."
The use of AI in corporate communications and product development is not new to Duolingo. The company has been collaborating with OpenAI since September 2022 to integrate AI technologies into its offerings, preceding the public launch of ChatGPT by several months. The company’s co-founder, Luis von Ahn, has been a significant advocate for AI, given his background, having obtained his doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University, a leading institution in AI research.
In particular, Duolingo's Duolingo Max premium-tier subscription service utilises GPT-4, allowing users to engage in practical conversations using AI chatbots like "Oscar". These features provide users with simulated real-world interactions, such as ordering at a café in Paris, thereby enhancing the language learning experience.
Von Ahn even humorously remarked on Lily's capabilities during the earnings call: "I’m glad Lily was able to cover for me. She’s doing part of my job now. Over time, she’s going to do more and more of my job, and I can just retire." This points to the growing role AI might play in Duolingo's operations.
Lily's appearance during the earnings call caught attention due to her distinctive persona and attitude. With long purple hair and lilac eyeshadow, Lily presents a "bored teenager" vibe, beginning her presentation with a sarcastic, "Hi everyone. So Luis asked me to cover for him. Lucky me," followed by an eyeroll—a feature the company describes as her "classic" move.
Despite her unconventional persona for a corporate setting, Duolingo maintains that Lily’s character is a hit with users. "Her personality resonates strongly with our learners," the company stated. "Her sassy, sarcastic tone and relatable ‘bored teenager’ vibe give learners an amusing and approachable partner."
As Duolingo continues to innovate within the AI sphere, Lily stands out not only as a tool for summarising financial results but also as a benchmark for how AI can be used to make education more engaging and interactive, potentially shaping the future of language learning platforms.
