In a thought-provoking talk at iiyama’s London showroom on Tuesday, Patrick Willer, a "tech philosopher" at the Innovation Network, shared insights into the future technological landscape and the evolving role of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). The event, which captured the attention of attendees, highlighted the rapid advancements in AI and robotics, sparking discussions about what the future may hold.

Willer painted a vivid picture of a world where robots could soon outnumber humans, recalling the global population in 1800, which was around one billion. He cited projections for companies like Amazon, which already employs roughly 750,000 robots alongside 1.5 million human workers, suggesting a possible shift where robots could outpace human employees by 2030.

The discourse took a deeper dive into AI's integration into humanoid robots, questioning the implications of such advancements. The pace of AI development was a central theme of Willer’s presentation, infused with both optimism and cautious anticipation. As Lewis Clifford, iiyama’s professional display sales manager, noted, the ideas were “a little frightening and exciting at the same time.”

Under the theme "Surfing the Wave of Exponential Growth," Willer elaborated on how AI innovations are transforming various fields. He noted a notable achievement—AI’s role in winning a Nobel Prize for predicting protein structures. Willer envisaged a future where AI would be as common as websites or apps, each having its own intelligent assistant.

The session transitioned to Steve Kilroy, regional country manager at iiyama, who showcased the company's contributions in educational and cultural sectors. An illustrative example was the initiative at Grove Primary School in London, led by Mina Patel of the National Video Conference Education Group. The school utilises a 75” interactive flat panel and 4K videoconferencing camera from iiyama to facilitate virtual educational trips, including to the National Space Centre on World Environment Day.

Kilroy also highlighted iiyama’s collaborations with prominent institutions such as the Imperial War Museums in London, the Enigma Cipher Centre in Poznan, Poland, and the German Museum in Germany, all aimed at enhancing educational engagement through advanced technology.

Looking forward, Kilroy announced plans for iiyama's technological expansions, including the rollout of their cloud-based iiSignage2 CMS and device management platform across all displays. The company is also preparing to introduce a new generation of all-in-one displays, reflecting robust post-pandemic growth in touchscreen sales, including open frame touchscreens.

Discussing future innovations, Kilroy mentioned iiyama's exploration of e-paper and LED technologies. However, he acknowledged the current challenges due to high costs associated with e-paper compared to LCD displays. Despite these costs, LCDs remain an attractive option owing to their relatively lower energy consumption.

Through insightful discussions and a forward-looking outlook, the talks at iiyama’s London showroom provided a comprehensive glimpse into the trajectory of technological evolution, leaving attendees informed and contemplating the intriguing possibilities of AI and robotics.
