PITT OHIO Embraces AI to Transform Freight Shipping Efficiency

Pittsburgh-based freight services company, PITT OHIO, has successfully revamped its operational framework with the integration of an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) powered enterprise system. This transformation has resulted in significant cost savings and operational efficiencies, marking a pivotal development in the logistics industry. As of the first quarter of 2024, the company has reportedly saved more than $11 million since the implementation of the system, mainly within the domain of pickup and delivery operations.

Founded over four decades ago, PITT OHIO is a prominent provider of less-than-truckload (LTL), warehousing, and full truckload freight-shipping services. In its quest for enhanced service efficiency, the company embarked on replacing its existing legacy systems with a highly advanced AI-driven platform. The overhaul aimed to automate manual processes, boost driver productivity, expedite information flow, and align with its sustainability initiatives by reducing paper waste.

The new system, developed in collaboration with Pennsylvania-based AI software developer Maven, serves a dual purpose: it modernises existing operations and facilitates seamless real-time data processing. Maven, known for its expertise in AI solutions tailored to trucking operations, played a critical role in designing the platform to support the unique demands of PITT OHIO's extensive fleet operations, spread across the United States.

Key features of the new platform include the automation of tasks such as signing drivers in and out of vehicles, accessing information via a mobile application for drivers, and enabling real-time issue flagging. The improved system allows drivers to promptly report delivery challenges to customer service, therefore enhancing customer interaction. Additionally, it enhances communication between drivers and dispatchers, providing timely updates on variables affecting deliveries such as weather or traffic conditions.

Another significant advantage is the system’s ability to digitise maintenance requests, which are sent automatically to truck depots and initiate repairs as soon as a vehicle returns. Such enhancements not only save time but also streamline operational processes, contributing directly to the bottom line.

Since the system launch, drivers save an average of 20 minutes per day, and approximately 15 minutes per pickup at key distribution centres due to the automatic population of customer data. This efficiency was further demonstrated when a competitor recently ceased operations; PITT OHIO absorbed the additional shipments without hiring more office staff, underscoring the system’s scalability and efficiency.

The platform also offers a mobile application that integrates with fleet operations, allowing for seamless pickups and deliveries, and providing a comprehensive real-time snapshot of the entire fleet’s status.

Looking ahead, PITT OHIO plans to continue refining the AI system, collaborating with Maven to explore further improvements in productivity, efficiency, and profitability. This venture stands as a potentially influential model for the logistics industry, illustrating the transformative power of AI in modernising and optimising outdated systems.

PITT OHIO's approach exemplifies the benefits that can be reaped from utilising advanced technology in logistics, as it maintains its commitment to safety, compliance, and high-quality customer service throughout its evolving operations.
