Surge in Electricity Demand Due to Rise of AI Technologies Raises Concerns
In recent years, the expanding utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies has triggered a significant surge in electricity demand across the United States, a development posing unprecedented challenges to the nation’s electricity grids. Midline projections suggest that the U.S. will need at least 50% more installed electricity capacity by the end of the decade to accommodate this ever-growing demand.
AI technologies, long anticipated by both science fiction writers and computer scientists, have been gradually weaving themselves into the fabric of daily life. From search engines that learn user patterns to smart devices delivering personalised advertisements, AI advancements are becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Modern-day tools such as smart TVs and devices with constant connectivity are contributing to this heightened electricity requirement, necessitating a constant power supply for expansive AI data centres.
AI’s influence extends into numerous sectors, from chemistry, where its utility in understanding and designing novel proteins recently earned a Nobel Prize, to oil and gas industries utilising AI-driven seismic analysis to cut costs. These applications, though beneficial to individual users or organisations, showcase the immense computational power required to fulfil such tasks. The scenario escalates when millions of users simultaneously request AI services such as ChatGPT for various purposes, notably contributing to further power consumption.
As AI technologies continue to advance, the rate at which global knowledge doubles has exponentially accelerated. Predictions made by IBM suggested that human knowledge would double every 12 hours by 2020, highlighting both the extraordinary speed of information influx and the increasing reliance on AI to process this data avalanche. However, the abundance of information introduces challenges, notably the proliferation of misinformation, which remains a critical flaw in generative AI systems, as they often struggle to distinguish factual data from falsehoods.
Major tech companies, recognising the impending electricity demand, are already acting to secure their energy sources. For instance, Microsoft has initiated steps to restart Unit 1 at the infamous Three Mile Island, while Google has made strides to acquire small modular reactors to sustain their AI operations. In contrast, AI centres reliant on existing grid operators face potential hurdles, particularly in regions like California, Texas, and the Pennsylvania-Jersey-Maryland area, where electricity markets do not incentivise capacity expansion.
Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking had previously cautioned against the potential for AI to upheave civilisation if unchecked or mishandled. A more immediate concern, however, lies in the strain these technologies exert on global resources, risking severe repercussions like those alluded to in Hawking's forewarnings about unsustainable energy usage.
