UK Homeowners Seek Information Amidst Heat Pump Innovation

A recent survey by Mitsubishi Electric has revealed a significant knowledge gap among UK homeowners regarding low-carbon heating alternatives. Despite a growing interest in eco-friendly solutions, over 70% of homeowners feel uninformed about these options. The survey, which polled over 2,000 homeowners, indicated that while nearly half (49%) of respondents are enthusiastic about switching to low-carbon heating systems, a vast majority—79%—still rely on gas boilers. Only a small fraction (4%) have adopted air-source heat pumps.

This knowledge gap is compounded by widespread misconceptions about the costs and efficiency of heat pumps, which continue to hinder their adoption. Additionally, around 36% of installers report insufficient financial incentives to develop skills related to heat pump installation, indicating a skills gap within the market.

While government incentives such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme have seen increased engagement following enhanced grant support, both consumers and industry professionals are calling for more substantial financial backing, better information dissemination, and accessible opportunities for upskilling to support a broader transition to clean heating technologies.

Amidst this backdrop, Manchester-based company Wondrwall has launched a pioneering propane air-source heat pump, incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve what the firm describes as "significant" energy savings. Wondrwall's new unit uses an AI-powered home energy management system (HEMS) that learns about the thermal dynamics of a home, energy usage patterns, and user preferences. This adaptive technology customises heating schedules and flow temperatures according to occupancy and behaviours.

Trials conducted in collaboration with the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero showed that Wondrwall's AI-augmented system could reduce energy bills by 87% compared to a standard heat pump alone in an average new-build home. The heat pump, capable of providing hot water up to 75ºC and operating efficiently at temperatures as low as -25ºC, supports both heating and cooling functions. It is available in two models offering heating capacities ranging from 2.92kW to 12.1kW, with coefficients of performance (COPs) reaching up to 4.96.

In 2022, Wondrwall received over £452,000 through the UK government's Heat Pump Ready programme, in partnership with Daikin, to address integration challenges and enhance the energy performance of heat pumps. Although the recent model is Wondrwall’s own design, the partnership with Daikin helped identify critical areas for improvement, leading to the development of a proprietary heat pump for optimal integration with their platform.

The company is opening its HEMS application programming interface (API) to other manufacturers, encouraging industry-wide collaboration. Wondrwall’s CEO, Daniel Burton, emphasised the potential of this new system to revolutionise the industry by aligning with existing standards and setting new collaboration benchmarks, particularly in UK new-build homes.

Wondrwall's technology, which promises net-zero carbon emissions depending on building specifications, is currently being trialled by prominent housebuilders including Redrow, Taylor Wimpey, CALA, Bellway, and Vistry. The introduction of this innovative heat pump coincides with Wondrwall’s Energy Services Contract (ESC) product that aims to eliminate the 'green premium' by facilitating the installation of solar PV, battery storage, and electric vehicle charging points without upfront costs.

This launch presents a promising development in the UK's housing market, potentially driving forward the integration of low-carbon heating solutions and supporting the nation's efforts towards sustainability.
