Genetec, a notable player in the access control software market, has solidified its position as the second leading provider globally, according to findings from Omdia’s 2024 Access Control Report. Over the past six years, the company has witnessed a steady increase in market share, primarily driven by its focus on innovation and the adoption of unified security platforms that integrate multiple security functions.

The report highlighted a significant shift in the Americas, where access control systems have evolved from being solely a concern for physical security departments to becoming integral parts of broader business operations. This development has spurred demand for unified security platforms that enable organisations to manage multiple security systems—including access control, video surveillance, and intrusion detection—from a single interface.

Christian Morin, Vice President of Product Engineering at Genetec, noted the company’s strategy of “rapid organic growth” as a cornerstone of its success. While many legacy access control vendors pursue expansion through acquisitions, Genetec has focused on continuous innovation and investments in new technologies. Recent introductions to their lineup include Security Center SaaS, HID Mercury Security MP controllers, Axis Powered by Genetec, and an I/O module developed in collaboration with STid, which aims to enhance the company’s high assurance access control system offerings in Europe.

Genetec's approach has been to address the specific needs of different regions, particularly focusing on the fragmented EMEA market, where flexibility and customisation are favoured by end users. The company’s commitment to open architecture systems allows clients to integrate various components from different vendors, which aligns with the preference for adaptable solutions in that market.

In the Asia-Pacific region, excluding China, Genetec is advancing in its rankings, having moved to the sixth position from tenth in 2021. The company has capitalised on the trend of enterprise users and multinational corporations seeking modernised access control infrastructures that are rich in features, cyber-secure, and capable of strong integration.

The increasing trend toward hybrid cloud deployments within the access control market is also notable. Genetec’s Security Center SaaS represents a shift towards providing physical security solutions that leverage cloud capabilities. This allows organisations the flexibility to transition components and entire sites to the cloud according to their specific requirements, enabling a gradual upgrade of technology.

Genetec's open platform architecture is central to its business model, offering users the ability to select access control devices that align with their unique operational needs while safeguarding prior investments. This strategy has contributed to the company’s sustained success in access control, as evidenced by the support and increasing adoption they have experienced in various global markets.

As of the latest report, Genetec has also maintained its competitive edge in video surveillance, further solidifying its standing as a key player across multiple sectors within the security technology landscape. This ongoing evolution within Genetec and the broader access control market indicates a dynamic shift in how organisations are approaching security, integrating technology and operational efficiency to adapt to contemporary business needs.
