A significant development in sustainable urban mobility is set to take place in the Netherlands, with Renault Group launching Europe's first large-scale car-sharing service harnessing vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. This project is the result of a partnership with We Drive Solar, MyWheels, and the city of Utrecht, marking a pivotal moment for environmentally-conscious transport solutions.
The initiative will deploy a fleet of 500 Renault 5 E-Tech electric hatchbacks, which will be made available for car-sharing through the platform operated by MyWheels. Central to this project is the V2G bi-directional charging technology, a product of Mobilize, Renault Group’s sustainable mobility division. This technology allows electric vehicles not only to draw energy from the grid but also to return power during periods of high demand.
The dual benefits of this setup are noteworthy. The Renault 5 vehicles will help stabilise Utrecht’s electric grid through their bi-directional charging capabilities, thereby supporting renewable energy integration and reducing electricity costs. This functionality is particularly relevant for addressing the fluctuations common with solar and wind energy sources. Renault’s projections suggest that the fleet could contribute up to 10% of the flexible energy capacity required in the Utrecht region, especially during peak consumption times.
Utrecht has established itself as a frontrunner in renewable energy usage, with an impressive 35% of its rooftops equipped with solar panels. The introduction of the V2G technology coincides with the city’s existing commitment to sustainable energy solutions, further enhancing its efforts to build a resilient energy system.
We Drive Solar will play a crucial role in the deployment and operation of the bidirectional charging stations, which are essential for the integration of the electric vehicles into the local energy economy.
