ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode Launches With Regional Limitations

What is Advanced Voice Mode?

Advanced Voice mode allows users to interact with ChatGPT in a highly natural and conversational manner via voice. Features and Enhancements

The new mode includes:

  • Five New Voices: Named Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale, these voices add variety and offer enhanced accents in select foreign languages.
  • Memory Capabilities: ChatGPT can remember aspects of previous conversations, fostering a continuous dialogue over multiple interactions.
  • Custom Instructions: Users can set preferences, such as nicknames or specific styles of communication, which ChatGPT will recall and use in future interactions.
  • Visual Effects: A blue orb visual effect accompanies spoken responses, making interactions more engaging.

Implementation and Restrictions

OpenAI began a gradual rollout of Advanced Voice mode to Plus subscribers earlier this year, with the full rollout expected to complete by the end of this week. Users will receive a notification indicating when the feature is available to them.

However, due to the stipulations of the EU AI Act, the feature will not be available in the EU and several other European countries. The legislation restricts AI systems from inferring emotions of a natural person, a capability of ChatGPT's Advanced Voice mode that makes it non-compliant with the current law. This restriction has led to OpenAI halting the feature's availability in these regions until further clarifications or adjustments to the regulations are made.
