AI-Generated Essays Create 'Atmosphere of Distrust' in Academia, Educator Says

Hick initially detected an AI-generated essay in late 2022, but in the nearly two years since, he believes the phenomenon has escalated to a pervasive issue.
"All plagiarism has become AI plagiarism at this point," Hick remarked during an interview with Business Insider. He expressed his alarm over how widespread AI-driven academic malpractice has become, likening it to a "virus" infecting the academic integrity of assignments and examinations.
Reflecting on the assignments he currently gives in his classes, Hick admitted he now perceives how easily they could be compromised by AI tools. These sophisticated text generators can produce coherent, well-structured essays on virtually any topic, making it difficult for educators to distinguish between genuine student work and AI-produced content.
The educational implications have been significant. Students were quick to adopt AI-text generators, recognising their utility in crafting essays from scratch and assisting with other academic tasks. This rapid adoption led to a surge in plagiarism cases, the erosion of academic standards, and a burgeoning atmosphere of distrust between students and faculty members.
For educators, the challenge has been twofold: identifying instances of AI-generated work and addressing the broader ethical and procedural issues that accompany it. "It's changed the landscape of how we approach teaching and assessment," Hick noted.
The rise of AI plagiarism has also led to collateral issues, such as false accusations of cheating. Educators, now more vigilant and sometimes sceptical, face the difficult task of discerning legitimate work from AI-assisted submissions, sometimes resulting in strained relationships between professors and their students.
