In a recent study examining the performance of new and advanced LED lighting fixtures for aquariums, comprehensive data on light intensity, spread, and spectral distribution of light was meticulously gathered and analysed. The LED fixtures included Radion G6 XR30 PRO, GNC Bluray X, and AI Blade Coral Grow 21”. All tests were conducted with a consistent and rigorous setup to ensure reliable and comparable results.

Testing Setup and Methodology

The testing was conducted on a 3’X3’ grid with 3” spacing along both the X and Y axes. Each fixture was centred atop this grid. Light measurements, specifically Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD) in micromoles/m2/sec, were taken using a LICOR 1000 data logger paired with a LI-192SA cosine corrected sensor. The data logger averaged 5 readings per point, and measurements were taken at 24” and 30” distances from the light source. This data was then imported into Microsoft Excel for analysis.

Furthermore, spectral characteristics were measured using a UPRtek spectral PAR meter PGN100. This device provided normalized spectral plots and additional data such as PPFD and Photon Flux Density (PFD) across UV, Blue, Green, Red, and Far Red ranges. Power consumption was recorded using a MECHEER power meter plug.

Results and Analyses

Radion G6 XR30 PRO

The Radion G6 XR30 PRO contains 100 LEDs and is actively cooled by a fan. It measures 11.8” X 7” X 1.5” and weighs about 4.5 lbs. Spectral analysis indicated a peak output at 449 nm, with PPFD values of 173.2 micromoles/m2/sec at 24” and 111.7 micromoles/m2/sec at 30”.
