He stressed that the term “Assisted Intelligence,” rather than “Artificial Intelligence,” may be more apt, underlining the need to maintain human oversight.

"The complexity of the ground often entails numerous unknowns, which aren't always suitable for AI's pattern recognition capabilities," Gilson remarked. He brought attention to the importance of “reasonable skill and care” in consultancy agreements, urging industry professionals to exercise caution and ensure that decisions informed by LLMs can withstand legal scrutiny.

He noted the significant risk of information loss as experienced engineers retire. Arup is already making strides in this direction. Gilson revealed that the company is testing a customised AI chatbot for its global Ground Engineering Skills Network. This tool aims to enhance knowledge sharing and information retrieval, enabling engineers to execute simple prompts for swift access to both internal and publicly available guidance.
