Hackers Exploit Legitimate Websites for Spam Distribution
In related cybersecurity news, hackers have developed a novel method for distributing spam, exploiting the infrastructure of legitimate websites. This technique has proved challenging for spam filters, as it doesn’t involve taking over the site; the website continues to operate as intended, making it harder for spam filters to block such emails efficiently.
Researchers from Cisco Talos have identified this campaign, explaining that it manipulates sign-up and registration services of various websites. The attack works by overloading the name field with text and a link. Since the site typically does not validate or sanitize this content, the information gets returned to the victim in the post-registration email unfiltered.
"Unfortunately for defenders, there is very little we can do to defend against such spam messages," a Cisco Talos spokesperson said. "Most emails sent by these contact forms are legitimate, so the malicious email blends in with otherwise legitimate traffic."
Despite this, the spam emails are generally blatant and can be easily spotted by recipients familiar with post-signup emails from specific sites. The emails appear slightly different due to the embedded link and excessive text, signalling to recipients that the site’s infrastructure is being misused.
