Identifying Fake AI-Generated Photos in the Aftermath of Hurricane Helene
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In the wake of Hurricane Helene, numerous images portraying both hope and devastation have surfaced. However, not every picture disseminated in the aftermath is genuine, with many AI-generated photos being circulated, creating a challenge for information accuracy.
Among the most shared images includes one depicting two dogs perched atop a submerged home amid floodwaters. At first glance, the photo seems authentic and garnered widespread attention, amassing over 2,700 likes and 1,300 shares when shared by a California-based rescue group. Nevertheless, upon closer investigation, it was revealed to be an artificial creation.
The tell-tale sign was found upon examining the origin of the post. The rescue group had tagged a Facebook page known for creating AI-generated images. Further analysis of the Facebook page confirmed its consistent generation of digitally-manipulated photos.
Another questionable image depicts a man appearing to rescue a dog from floodwaters. Anomalies such as the man having six fingers and three nostrils under scrutiny flagged the image as suspect. These peculiar details are often indicative of AI models, which can sometimes produce such irregularities in the generated content.
To verify the authenticity of the images of dogs on the rooftop, they were submitted to an AI-detection site. The analysis concluded with a 99% probability that the images were generated using AI.
As Hurricane Helene continues to capture global attention, the proliferation of AI-created photos underscores the importance of verifying the authenticity of visually compelling stories. Recognising and addressing this issue is crucial to maintaining the integrity of rescue efforts and informing public perception accurately.
