Kansas City Hosts Groundbreaking IFDA 2024 Solution Conference on AI and Emerging Technologies
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The International Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA) held the highly anticipated 2024 Solution Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, drawing key players from the foodservice distribution industry. The two-day event, described famously by IFDA President and CEO Mark S. The opening keynote by Dr. Pippa Malmgren provided a comprehensive look at geopolitical and technological advancements poised to influence the future. She spotlighted the transformative potential of AI within the food industry, citing Google’s GNoME AI, which has identified 2.2 million new crystals, of which 380,000 are stable materials. Though their practical applications remain obscure, this discovery underscores the expansive possibilities ushered in by AI. Crucially, Dr. Malmgren stressed that human creativity and judgement are essential in harnessing these new technologies effectively.
Enhancing Safety with AI
A notable session titled “From Reactive to Proactive: How AI is Transforming the Role of Dash Cams and other Fleet Safety Tech,” centered on the safety benefits afforded by AI technologies in foodservice distribution logistics. Representatives from Sysco Corp., Performance Foodservice Group, and Aunt Millie’s Bakery shared insights on their use of Samsara technology to enhance fleet safety.
Beth Woodbury, Vice President of Safety at Aunt Millie’s Bakeries, elaborated on the cautious yet strategic rollout of dash cams in their fleet. She pointed out the initial resistance from drivers and the importance of obtaining union and employee buy-in. "Dash cams were, and they still are a very sensitive subject, so we’re implementing them slowly. Trying to get the union buy-in, employee buy-in; we’re reinforcing that we’re not trying to create turnover with this. It’s not a disciplined program, it’s a more proactive program," she noted.
Networking and Emerging Technologies
The conference's exhibition floor demonstrated a broad array of emerging technologies aimed at improving workplace efficiency and safety. Highlights included robotic systems for moving pallets, wearable robotic technologies for better physical support of workers, and advanced camera systems designed to streamline inventory management.
Attendees underscored the invaluable aspect of in-person connectivity in driving industry progress. Jim Owens from Marrad emphasized the benefits of firsthand technology evaluation and networking opportunities provided by the conference. "We do walk the show ourselves and look at other booths and see what people were able to offer, and then also how they’re marketing themselves, and then the opportunity for us to introduce ourselves," he said.
Long-standing participant Brett Olsen of Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company echoed similar sentiments about the event’s significance. "The value [of the conference] is our customers are here…and that’s one of our fortes. Those are the people that are here, that’s the value of the conference," he added.
