Tech Giants Turning to Nuclear Energy to Power AI Expansion
New York, USA (CNN Business) — As the demand for artificial intelligence continues to surge, major tech companies are looking towards nuclear energy as a solution to the escalating need for computing power. This shift comes in response to predictions of a significant increase in electricity consumption driven by AI operations and data centers, raising concerns over energy sustainability and environmental impact.

In his capacity as chairman of nuclear startup Oklo, Altman is pushing forward with innovative nuclear projects. Oklo recently received approval to start site investigations for a microreactor in Idaho.
In a similar vein, Founders Fund, a venture capital firm co-founded by Peter Thiel, is investing in a startup dedicated to developing an advanced production method for a more powerful nuclear fuel, intended for use in cutting-edge reactors.
The relationship between AI advancements and nuclear energy doesn’t lack irony. Proponents of AI have frequently drawn parallels with the history of nuclear proliferation to highlight the importance of regulatory frameworks for AI, stressing that such regulations should not impede technological progress or profitability.
Although some might dismiss AI-related concerns as exaggerated, the apprehensions surrounding nuclear energy remain grounded in historical incidents like the Three Mile Island mishap. According to Anna Erickson, a nuclear science professor at Georgia Tech, nuclear safety has progressed significantly since 1979 due to enhanced understanding and stringent regulations initiated post-incident. However, she cautions, "Nothing in life is ever foolproof."
This pivot towards nuclear energy is considered almost inevitable for sustaining the future energy appetite of AI technologies. Despite the advancements in renewable energy, nuclear power is seen as a more stable and virtually carbon-emission-free alternative. Yet, transitioning to nuclear energy infrastructure will take years, meaning that, in the interim, Big Tech data centers will continue relying on fossil fuels to meet the ever-growing power demands.
