The Simpsons’ ‘Series Finale’ Prank Leaves Fans Bewildered

This show was such a special part of my early career, so being here means the world to me.” His solemn pronouncement set the stage for what many believed to be the end of The Simpsons.
However, the episode turned out to be a clever parody of what an effective series finale might look like. O’Brien introduced the concept of using “Hack-GPT” AI to generate the perfect ending for the series. The episode proceeded to satirise famous TV finales, with The Simpsons characters reenacting iconic closing scenes from shows such as The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, and Succession.
The episode humorously explored clichéd ideas for endings: Principal Skinner’s retirement, Moe closing down his bar, and the death of Mr Burns. It even played with the idea of character development, a long-standing taboo in Springfield, by celebrating Bart's birthday with a cake displaying the number "11," a clear violation of the rule that no one ages in Springfield. In defiance, Bart rejects the notion of change, maintaining his character's core rebellious spirit.
The episode featured a star-studded voice cast, including John Cena, Danny DeVito, Joel McHale, Seth Rogen, Mark Proksch, Amy Sedaris, and Tom Hanks, the latter of whom humorously expressed his indignation at dressing up for a fake series finale.
The “series finale” concluded with homage scenes mirroring the finales of The Sopranos, Frasier, Mad Men, and Newhart. The tributes were a nostalgic nod that resonated deeply with fans, who were left wondering yet again about the show's future.
While the episode stirred concerns, it appears to be more of a playful critique on the show’s longevity and the speculation about its end. Despite the episode's title card and thematic undertones, Fox has not confirmed the series' cancellation, and there's no official word on a 37th season yet.
The Simpsons continues to stream in the UK on Disney+, and despite recent episodes signalling otherwise, fans can look forward to more antics from America's favourite animated family—for now at least.
